Importing servers into the system

You can add multiple servers to a server hierarchy by specifying a text file that contains a list of server names and properties assigned to each server. You can also install agents on those servers at the same time.

Overview

When you import servers into the system, you have the option of installing agents on the servers by running an Agent Installer Job. Some preliminary procedures are required before you can run an Agent Installer Job. For information about those requirements, see Agent installation overview.

You can import server to the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) or a server group. When you import servers to the Servers node, the system adds those servers to its internal list of servers being managed. However, the system does not display the new servers in the server hierarchy so no visible changes occur unless the imported servers are automatically included in a smart group. After importing servers to the Servers node, you can manually assign the imported servers to server groups (see Assigning servers to server groups).

To import servers, your role must be granted the Server.Create authorization. For more information about granting authorizations, see Access control overview.

To import servers

1. Open the Servers folder and do one of the following:
   • Right-click the Servers node (the top node in the Servers folder) and select Import Servers from the pop-up menu.
   • Right-click a server group and select Import Servers to Group from the pop-up menu.
     The Import Servers wizard opens.
2. Provide information for the Import Server wizard, as described in the following sections:
   • Import Servers - Import Servers
   • Import Servers - Permissions
3. Click Finish.
   A background process imports the servers in the list. Depending on how you have specified behavior for background processes, either a dialog box displays or the Show background operations icon appears in the lower right corner of the console. Both indicate an operation is running in the background.
   When the import is complete, a dialog box tells you how many servers were successfully imported and lists any servers that may have failed to import, along with a reason for each failure.
