Folder content organization

Use the BMC Server Automation Console to organize the contents of functional areas into folders, groups, and smart groups.

A folder is a collection of unique system objects. Each system object in a folder can only occur in one place.

Groups and smart groups are collections of system objects or references to system objects. In groups and smart groups, references to system objects are not necessarily unique. References to the same object can occur in more than one group or smart group. To populate a group or folder, you must explicitly add system objects.

Smart groups are groups for which you define membership conditions based on object properties. Any object with properties matching the conditions you specify automatically becomes a member of a smart group. For example, you can define a server smart group that requires all member servers to be running a Microsoft Windows operating system. (The operating system is a property assigned to all servers.) Using a smart group in this way, you can group all Windows servers together automatically. The contents of a smart group can change depending on changes in the properties of system objects.

The Jobs, Depot, and Component Template folders let you organize objects into folders and smart groups. The Servers and Components folders let you organize objects into groups and smart groups. You cannot group objects in the RBAC Manager folder.

The following table describes which BMC Server Automation folder objects can be combined into folders, groups, and smart groups.

To define folders, groups, and smart groups, use the following procedures:

• Searching for objects
• Creating a folder or group
• Defining a smart group

Within each folder, the console provides easy methods for managing groups, folders, and their content. You can cut and paste folders and the system objects they contain.
