Defining organizational structure

BMC IT Business Management provides the capabilities of hierarchical data management and data access control. After you define a hierarchical structure of your organization, you can set the required data access restrictions in the company hierarchy for the people that you add for that company.

Recommendation

Define the hierarchical structure of your organization before you start adding people information to the system.

The following figure shows a typical BMC IT Business Management Suite business unit hierarchy:

To define the organizational structure for your company

  1. Configure an operating company.

    In BMC Remedy AR System, a company of type Operating Company is used to configure an operating company. For more, information, see Configuring companies.
  2. Configure all organizational units corresponding to functional areas in your company.

    In BMC Remedy AR System, a company of type Organizational Unit is used to configure organizational units. For more information, see Configuring organizational units.
  3. Use custom configuration in BMC Remedy AR System to define a hierarchy of your organization by creating the following relationships between the organizational units:
    • Relate one top-level organizational unit to fall under the operating company. You cannot relate multiple organizational units under an operating company.
    • Configure the organizational units to relate to either the top-level organizational unit or to other organizational units to mirror the functional hierarchy of your organization.

Note

Even though you define the organizational units as Companies in BMC Remedy AR System, after you create a hierarchical relationships among these companies and they are inherited in the BMC IT Business Management Suite, they are referred to as organizational units within BMC IT Business Management Suite.

To define the organizational structure for an example company, Calbro Financials

A company, Calbro Financials, has the following hierarchy:

  • Human Resources
  • Marketing
    • Field Support
  • Sales
    • North America Sales
      • East Coast Support
    • South America Sales

The organizational structure for Calbro Financials is defined as follows steps in the BMC AR System interface:

  1. Configure Calbro Financials as a company of type Operating Company.
  2. Configure Calbro Financial Organizations as a company of type Organizational Unit. This is the top-level organizational unit.
  3. Use the custom configuration in BMC Remedy AR System to relate Calbro Financial Organizations as a child organizational unit to operating company. You can relate only one organizational unit as child organizational unit to the operating company. All subsequent organizational units can then be related to either Calbro Financial Organizations or to other organizational units.
  4. Configure Human Resources, Marketing, and Sales as companies of type Organizational Unit.
  5. Use the custom configuration in BMC Remedy AR System to configure these companies as child organizational units of Calbro Financial Organizations.
  6. Configure North America Sales and South America Sales as companies of type Organizational Unit.
  7. Use the custom configuration to configure these as child organizational units of Sales.
  8. Similarly, configure Field Support as company of type Organizational Unit and relate it as child organizational unit of Marketing.
  9. Configure East Coast Support as company of type Organizational Unit and relate it as child organizational unit of North America Sales.

The resulting hierarchy of Calbro Financials is as shown in the following diagram:
