Sharing or backing up a migration pack

If you want to share a migration pack between installations of BMC Helix Data Manager or back up the configuration of a migration pack, you can export the configuration to the file system. The configuration will be created as a compressed xml file collection that can be imported into another BMC Helix Data Manager instance.

To ensure cross-installation compatibility, the migration pack export file contains the related data, including:

  • Migration Pack—The runtime templates, migration trees, parameters, and data enrichment configuration.
  • Discovered data dictionaries—All discovered metadata for the source and target systems. This includes forms, indexes, fields, enums, relationships, and data relationships.
  • Relationship set—If the migration pack is linked to a relationship set, the forms and relationships in the relationship set are included in the export.

This is a large quantity of metadata to read to the file system, which means that an export is a relatively long-running operation taking several minutes to complete.

To export a migration pack

  1. From the navigation bar, select Data Migration > Migration Packs.
  2. Select a migration pack.
  3. Select Action > Export to File.

  4. Enter the File Name of the export file.
  5. Click Export Migration Package.
The progress bar is updated as the export process writes the metadata for the migration pack, discovered data dictionaries, and relationship set to the file system.
  6. Click Close to close the dialog box and return to the migration pack page, or click Open File Manager to access the BMC Helix Data Manager file system and download the migration pack file to your local machine.
