High-level process

After you complete configuration and BMC Database Automation (BDA) begins to create the SQL Server instance, the following process occurs:

  1. Upload media.
  2. Run pre-provisioning scripts.
  3. Create an SQL Server instance.
  4. Run the post-provisioning scripts.
  5. Apply patches.
  6. Run the final script.

Before you begin

  • SQL Server media has been installed on the Manager by using the provided tool. This enables the Manager to automatically download the media to all servers as required when performing the creation of SQL Server instances. See Setting up SQL Server media.
  • The node on which the SQL Server instances will run must meet all of the SQL Server prerequisites.
  • If the host is a member of a Windows cluster, credentials for a domain administrator account are required.
  • Mixing 32-bit and 64-bit SQL Server instances on the same node or cluster is not supported.

To create an instance of SQL Server on a node

  1. From the Management Console, navigate to the node on which you want to add an instance.
  2. Select Provision > Add SQL Server Instance.
  3. In the Naming page, populate the following fields, and click Next.

    Field

    Description

    Domain

Displays the BMC Database Automation domain within which this instance of SQL Server is created.

    Host

Displays the Windows host on which to run this instance.

    SQL Server Version

Displays the version of SQL Server to install. The entries in this list depend of the media installed, OS version and CPU architecture.

    Template

Select a template for this operation. See Setting up SQL Server media. If you select a template, click Skip Ahead to advance directly to the next step that requires input. An informational message appears on these steps, in green type, listing the fields that require entries before advancing to the next step.

    Instance Name

Type the name of the instance of SQL Server.

    Make Default

(Optional) Select to make this instance of SQL Server the default instance on the host. If this check box is dimmed, that indicates that there is already a default instance installed.

  4. Complete the remaining pages in the wizard.

    Note

Depending on the version of SQL Server that you are installing, there might be slight variations in the wizards presented in the BMC Database Automation GUI. For more information on various pages and descriptions of the fields in them, see Creating a clustered SQL Server instance. For more information about supported versions of SQL Server, see Microsoft SQL Server.
