The distributed architecture of this product provides scalability and other benefits, and promotes strategies for high availability and disaster recovery. BMC Application Diagnostics can stand alone, or integrated with another product, such as BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring or BMC ProactiveNet. The following figure illustrates the BMC Application Diagnostics basic system architecture, and where it meets with BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring:

Basic BMC Application Diagnostics system architecture

Basic system components

The basic system consists of the following components, each of which is a virtual machine:

  • BMC Application Performance Management Console component. The Console is the main user interface of the system and is accessed by using browser software. The Console hosts dashboards and system-management features, deep-dive business transaction data, and provides links to the user interfaces of the optionally integrated BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring system. Every BMC Application Diagnostics system must have one Console component.

  • BMC Application Diagnostics Agent for Java and .NETThe Agents capture a sample of the transactions that have latency violations or errors. The captured data and the metrics data for the application server are sent to the BMC Application Diagnostics Collector and stored in the MySQL database.

  • BMC Application Diagnostics ServerThe Server comprises the following components:

    • BMC Application Diagnostics CollectorThe Collector communicates with one or more BMC Application Diagnostics Agents. It stores the information for the monitored application that is monitored by the BMC Application Diagnostics Agent. Each Collector has its own MySQL database where all information is saved. You can install and define up to five BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors per BMC Application Diagnostics Portal.

    • BMC Application Diagnostics Portal componentThe Portal is the main component that manages Collectors and Agents, and it collects relevant data to be displayed in the Console. Each BMC Application Diagnostics Portal supports up to 1000 BMC Application Diagnostics Agents. The agents are divided between BMC Application Diagnostics Collectors (up to 5), allowing 200 agents per BMC Application Diagnostics Collector.
