For customers who are upgrading to BMC TrueSight Operations Management, this getting started topic describes how solution administration differs from BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management and BMC TrueSight App Visibility Manager. Solution Administrators should read this topic to understand how they will perform tasks differently in the TrueSight console.

Solution administration overview

The TrueSight console provides Solution Administrators with a consolidated interface for performing the following activities:

  • Connecting the Presentation Server to its data providers and integrating with other products
  • Setting up data collection and monitoring for IT Operations
  • Administering role-based access control to the data and monitoring features

For authentication of users and tenant management, Operations Management integrates out of the box with BMC Atrium Single Sign-on.

What is the Presentation Server?

The Presentation Server hosts the web-based TrueSight console functions and consumes events and performance data from the data providers to provide a consolidated set of views for monitoring the infrastructure from an application context. In addition to data presentation, the Presentation Server performs functions such as role-based access control and data management functions such as storage and persistence. The Presentation Server supports integrations to other products, high availability, and disaster recovery. User management and multitenancy support is enabled through integrated system authentication with BMC Atrium Single Sign-On.

What is a data provider?

Data providers collect and process the information that enables IT Operations to monitor IT infrastructure and applications. The Presentation Server connects to these data providers:

  • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management and BMC PATROL - Events, devices, and performance data
  • BMC TrueSight App Visibility Manager - Active application transactions and performance data
  • BMC Synthetic Transaction Execution Adapter Agent - Generated synthetic application transactions and performance data

Configuration of a data provider includes the following activities:

  • Connecting to the Presentation Server
  • Configuring the data provider's components, such as agents, collectors, and servers
  • Setting up data collection so you can feed that data to the Presentation Server

Tell me more about BMC Atrium Single Sign-On

BMC Atrium Single Sign-On is an authentication system that supports many authentication protocols and provides single sign-on and single sign-off for users of BMC products. BMC Atrium Single Sign-On allows users to present credentials only once for authentication and subsequently be automatically authenticated by every BMC product that is integrated into the system.

Using these authentication methods requires that you have previously installed the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On server and configured it with an authentication server such as LDAP, RSA SecurID, or others. Not only does BMC Atrium Single Sign-On support authentication with traditional systems such as LDAP or Active Directory, it also supports integration into existing single sign-on systems. BMC Atrium Single Sign-On is the central integration point that performs integration with the local enterprise systems.

Administrative consoles before and after upgrade

Before BMC TrueSight Operations Management 10.0, administration of the monitoring systems was performed in the individual product consoles, as follows:

  • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management - Administrators used Central Monitoring Administration, hosted on an Infrastructure Management Server, to download BMC PATROL Agents and Knowledge Modules, download Integration Service hosts, create installation packages, and set up monitoring policies to collect events and performance data from monitored systems.
  • BMC Application Diagnostics - Administrators used the BMC Application Performance Management Console to configure the portal, collectors, and agents, and to set up data collection and SLA rules.
  • BMC Synthetic Monitoring - Administrators used the BMC Application Performance Management Console to configure the BMC Synthetic TEA Agent and set up execution plans and scripts to generate synthetic transactions.
  • Authentication and access control were handled through mechanisms specific to the monitoring systems' architecture and consoles.

After upgrading to BMC TrueSight Operations Management, Solution Administrators will use the TrueSight console for system configuration, data provider configuration, and role-based access control. Security administrators or Solution Administrators will use the BMC Atrium SSO Admin Console to define users and tenants.

Administrative consoles after upgrade

Central Monitoring Administration for configuring Infrastructure Management monitoring is available from the TrueSight console only. (Note: The Infrastructure Management administrator console is still required to configure events and adapters. For further information, see Infrastructure Management administrator console Open link .)

Migration of system configuration to Operations Management

System configuration will be migrated to the TrueSight console as indicated in the following topics:

Migrating component and informationReference
BMC App Visibility Manager (formerly BMC Application Diagnostics) policy and configuration filesPreparing for an App Visibility upgrade and checking compatibility

BMC Transaction Management Application Response Time scripts and configurations

Note: Migration from BMC Synthetic Transaction Monitoring 2.6.00 (Borland Silk Performer Synthetic Transaction Monitoring for BMC Software ) is not currently supported.

Solution administration functions

The following figure illustrates the major functions of solution administration in the TrueSight console. For information about all configuration tasks, including those not performed in the console, see Administering and  Configuring after installation.

Quick tours

Each quick tour provide a visual overview of these functions and links to how-to information.

Quick tour of security administration functions

BMC Atrium Single Sign-On provides user account and tenant management to BMC TrueSight Operations Management. Solution Administrators create users, user groups and tenants as realms in the BMC Atrium SSO Admin Console. User Groups are then assigned to Authorization Profiles in the TrueSight console. For more information, see Managing users Open link in the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On documentation.

The TrueSight console provides role-based access control to data, system features, and features enabled by the data providers. Solution Administrators define roles and authorization profiles that control data access and the users' ability to perform functions. For more information, see Managing users and access control.

Quick tour of  system configuration and integration configuration

The initial configuration of the Presentation Server occurs during installation. After installation, the Solution Administrator connects the data providers to the Presentation Server and integrates other components that extend the functionality of the system. For more information, see Configuring after installation and Integrating.

Quick tour of administration for common monitoring functions

The TrueSight console provides the following common features for enabling IT Operations to monitor your IT infrastructure and critical applications:

  • Dashboards - All users can configure dashboards; however, Solution Administrators or specialists need to first configure the data providers and set up data collection.
  • Application models - All data providers can leverage applications models to enable monitoring in an application context. For more detailed information, see Use case: Monitoring the infrastructure in the context of an application.
  • Groups - Groups help organize the information that you want to monitor. Groups created by using the Infrastructure Management Administrator Console are synchronized to the TrueSight console.

Quick tour of Infrastructure Management configuration

Solution Administrators and specialists use Central Monitoring Administration to download BMC PATROL Agents and Knowledge Modules, download Integration Service hosts, manage the monitoring infrastructure, and set up monitoring policies to collect events and performance data from monitored systems. For more information, see Central Monitoring Administration for Infrastructure Management. (Note: The Infrastructure Management administrator console is still required to configure events and adapters. For further information, see Infrastructure Management administrator console Open link .)

Quick tour of  App Visibility configuration

To enable application monitoring, you configure the BMC TrueSight App Visibility components, set up application discovery, and set SLAs (thresholds to generate events).

Quick tour of Synthetic transaction monitoring configuration

Solution Administrators or specialists configure how to generate the synthetic transactions to synthetically monitor application health, which is monitored from Application monitoring. For complete information about this process, see Setting up and managing synthetic transaction monitoring.
