Installing BMC FootPrints Service Core on Linux systems

This topic explains the installation process for new installations of version 12.1.00 and later, on Linux systems.

Note

BMC FootPrints Service Core can only be installed once on each server (not in parallel on one server).

Prerequisites

To avoid issues during installation, address the prerequisites listed below in the order listed:

  1. Ensure that your system meets the minimal hardware and software requirements. For detailed information, see the System requirements.
  2. Install and configure the Java 8 SE Runtime Environment.

  3. Install and configure Tomcat:

  4. Make sure that the administration email address you provide during the installation process does not include the plus (+) or dash (-) characters.
  5. Have the following information available:
    • An encryption key phrase that you want to use for this installation. Encryption key phrases must be between 8 and 80 characters long. Any characters or symbols may be used.
    • The database connection information including type of database, host name or IP address, and user credentials.
  6. Ensure that the TCP/IP protocol is enabled.

To perform the installation

  1. Log on to the system where you want to install BMC FootPrints Service Core as an Administrator.
  2. Download the installer file. For more information, see Downloading the installation files.
  3. Extract the contents of the installer file to a temporary location.
  4. Execute the setup.bin file.
    The installer Welcome screen appears.
  5. If you want to install in a language other than English, click the down arrow and select a language. 
  6. Click OK.
    The Installer wizard verifies that your server meets the requirements, and then the License Agreement pane appears.
  7. Select I agree and click Next.
    The Installation Documentation pane appears, offering a link to the Installation Guide.
  8. Click Next.
    The FootPrints Service Core Administrator Setup pane appears.
  9. Enter the authentication information:
    1. Type values in the Login name, Password & Re-type password fields.
      Login Name must be 50 characters or less. The first character must be a letter or a number. The following characters are not allowed: @/\[]()":;|<>+=,?*.
      Passwords must be between 8 and 50 characters long and must contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one numeral and one special character. No character should be repeated more than three times. Passwords are validated by the system.
    2. Enter information in the Full name and Email address fields.
      The administration email address you provide cannot include the plus (+) or dash (-) characters.

  10. Click Next.
    The Installer wizard processes your selections so far and then the Installation Folder pane appears.
  11. Accept the default location or click Browse to select an installation folder.
    The selected folder must be empty.
  12. Click Next.
    The Encryption Key Setup pane appears.
  13. Enter the encryption key phrase that you want to use. If this phrase is not already recorded offline, save this phrase now in an appropriate location.
    Encryption key phrases must be between 8  and 80 characters long. Any characters or symbols may be used.
  14. Click Next.
    The Install and Verify Tomcat Web Server pane appears.
  15. Select the location of an installed Tomcat Web Server:
    1. Click Browse to select the installed server.
    2. If the Tomcat configuration files are not in the same location as the server, select Tomcat configuration files are installed in a different folder
      The Folder of installed Tomcat configuration files field appears.
    3. Click Browse to select the location and click Next.
      The select engine and host pane appears.
  16. Select the Tomcat Web Server information:

    1. In the Engine field, select the Tomcat Web Server Engine that you want to use.
    2. In the Host field, select the Tomcat Web Server Host that you want to use.
  17. Click Next.
    The Database Setup and Configuration pane appears.
  18. Complete the fields to create the database and enter your access credentials:

    1. Enter the information needed to access the database and click Next
      Only PostgreSQL databases are supported. The necessary information includes server host name, server port, instance name, and user credentials. The system verifies access to the database, and the Database objects permissions pane appears.

    2. Select Allow installer to create database or Use existing database.

    3. If you selected Use existing database, select the database from the list.

  19. Click Next.
    The system verifies that the selected database is available, and the Service Core Database Users pane appears.
  20. If you did not want to use the passwords generated by the installer, enter passwords for the FootPrints, Database, and Login users. You can also allow the installer to generate passwords. Make sure to save these passwords elsewhere in an encrypted file.
    Passwords must be at least six characters and include at least one lowercase letter, one uppercase letter, one number, and at least one number sign (#) or dollar sign ($). In addition, no character can be used consecutively more than twice.
  21. Click Next.
    The report user pane appears.
  22. Enter the password for the Database user.
    This user only connects to the database for viewing and generating reports with a third-party reporting tool. Make sure to save this password elsewhere.
  23. Click Next.
    The Application URL pane appears.
  24. (Optional) Change the values in the Application URL and Port field and the Application Path field.
  25. Click Next.
    The Ready to Install Service Core summary pane appears. You can copy this summary to store elsewhere.
  26. Review the contents of the summary and then click Install.
    The installer checks that there is sufficient disk space. If so, the progress pane appears. Errors display in this pane when they occur. When installation is complete, a success message appears.
  27. To view the installation log, click View Log.
    The log details appear in a new window. You can click an error to view additional details.

  28. Click Finish.
    The installer closes all windows that it opened.

  29. Install a 30-day trial license:

    1. Log into FootPrints Service Core.
      The Manage License page appears, showing a message to download a 30-day trial license.
    2. Click the message.
      The demo license download page opens in a new browser window.
    3. Download the license file.
    4. Return to the Manage License page and click Load License.
      The File Upload dialog box appears.
    5. Navigate to the license file and open it.
      The license is uploaded. If no workflow process is defined in your environment, the Create a new Business Process page appears.
    6. (Optional) Select a Business Process template to help you get started with working in BMC FootPrints Service Core.

  30. Start the Tomcat server.
    Installation is completed.
