Types of Windows proxies

The following types of BMC Atrium Discovery Windows proxies are available:

  • Credential Windows proxy: A BMC Atrium Discovery application that runs on a Windows host and uses credentials supplied by the BMC Atrium Discovery appliance to perform Windows discovery.
  • Active Directory Windows proxy: A BMC Atrium Discovery application that runs on a Windows host that is part of an Active Directory Domain or a Workgroup. During (or optionally after) the Windows proxy is installed, you configure it to run as a user. Where that user is configured on hosts in the domain or Workgroup, the Windows proxy can log in and run discovery commands. The Active Directory Windows proxy does not use any credentials entered using the BMC Atrium Discovery appliance web interface.

You must install the Windows proxy type appropriate to the network that you want to discover. If you do not have a common authentication mechanism, install a Credential Windows proxy.

To install the Windows proxy

New proxy manager introduced in BMC Atrium Discovery 8.3 SP2

A new windows proxy manager is introduced in BMC Atrium Discovery 8.3 SP2 which enables you to install, manage, and uninstall Windows proxies using a single, simple tool. See Windows proxy manager for more information.

Windows proxies are downloaded as install files from the appliance and installed onto the local Windows host. You must be logged in as an administrator to install Windows proxies. If an administrator user is not specified as the credential for each proxy during the proxy installation, then you need to grant permissions to write to the directories listed below, and which exist under C:\Program Files\BMC Software\ADDM Proxy_Type where Proxy_Type is one of the following:

  • Active Directory
  • Credential

If you are not logged in to BMC Atrium Discovery from the Windows computer onto which you want to install the Windows proxy, log in using a browser on that computer. You must be logged in to the Windows host as an administrator to install Windows proxies. If the software is not installed by an administrator, after installation you must grant permissions to write to C:\Program Files\BMC Software\ADDM Proxy_Type, where Proxy_Type is one of the following types:

  • Active Directory
  • Credential

Downloading a Windows proxy installer

The user that runs the Windows proxy must have necessary permissions to read from and write to the etc, log, and record directories. You must log in to the appliance as the system user to download the Windows proxy installers.
For more information, see the Downloading a Windows proxy installer section in Installing Windows proxies.

Installing a Windows proxy

For discovering Windows devices, you must add the installed Windows proxies to the appliance. For more information, see Managing Windows proxies.
