Release Compatibility

TKU 2009-Dec-1 is released in three streams:

  • Release compatible with Tideway Foundation 7.2 (subset - does not contain patterns which require TWF 7.3)
  • Release compatible with Tideway Foundation 7.3 and BMC Atrium Discovery 8.0
  • Release compatible with BMC Atrium Discovery 8.1

Note

TKU December (TKU 2009-Dec-1) is not compatible with nor supported on versions of Tideway Foundation before v7.2

Contents

The release comprises of four components packaged as two licensable entities:

  • BMC Atrium Discovery Technology Knowledge Update
    • Core - Patterns that model various software products
    • Database detail - Patterns that extend some of the core database patterns to obtain additional detailed information about certain databases
  • BMC Atrium Discovery Extended Data Pack
    • Product Lifecycle - Patterns that populate Atrium Discovery with information about End-of-Life, End-of-Support, and End-of-Extended-Support for versions of certain host Operating Systems as well as versions of certain software products
    • Hardware Reference Data - Patterns and data import CSV file that populate Atrium Discovery with power and heat consumption figures for various hosts.

To see some of the highlights of this release visit the December In The Spotlight Page

Installation and Upgrade

  • Foundation 7.2/7.3 and Atrium Discovery 8.0 - Installation and upgrade instructions are provided here
  • Atrium Discovery 8.1 - Installation and upgrade instructions are provided here

A matrix covering ALL commands executed and ALL files retrieved by the patterns is available to our customers as part of the TKU download

Enhanced Software Instance Patterns

Vendor Product Enhancement SI Key Change Pattern Module
BMC CONTROL-M BMC CONTROL-M/Agent pattern can optionally attempt to obtain the trigger process absolute path (if not obtained from the process listing) on Solaris and Linux platforms by running 'pmap' utility via privilege escalation. This functionality is disabled by default. N

Microsoft Hyper-V Server Pattern now uses WMI Query as the primary approach to obtain details of the running VMs. Additionally, the original identifier used to populate vm_uuid SI attribute was incorrect, and this has now been corrected - this value is now stored as vm_bios_serial attribute and used (as before) to create relationships between the Hyper-V VM Software Instances and Virtual Host instances. Furthermore, version mapping enhanced to support 2008 R2 release of Hyper-V. Y

Bugs Fixed

The following bugs have been fixed in BMC Atrium Discovery Technology Knowledge Update 2009-Dec-1

Case No Defect No Details Pattern Module
23139 12242 Problem: Depending on version Microsoft SQL Server being discovered, the Extended SQL Server pattern could fail to obtain the list of databases even with correct credentials as it relies on executing a stored procedure that may not be there or requiring more elevated credentials. Solution: Added another SQL query that obtains the list from sys.databases

N/A 12668 SI type for IBM FileNet Mid Range Image Import (part of IBM FileNet Image Import module) was missing the publisher name. Pattern updated with a fix.

IBM.FileNetHPIIMRII

N/A 12718 BMC Control-M Configuration Agent and Agent Listener patterns have a key_group that has type/host.key added to it which is not required since this is always implicitly added to the SI key that the system generates. Pattern updated so that grouping is based on version obtained.

BMC.CONTROLM

N/A 12719 IBM Tivoli Netcool/Reporter pattern can create an SI where a key_group has type/host.key added to it which is not required since this is always implicitly added to the SI key that the system generates. Pattern updated so that if this kind of SI is being generated, the system will just create an implicit grouped key

IBM.Tivoli.NetcoolReporter

23122 12730 Problem: The SI key created by Sybase Open Server pattern is not unique which leads to the SI being linked to multiple host (in essence multiple instances on various hosts merging into one). Solution: Pattern re-written to ensure that the SI key is unique. The SI key being created now is therefore different to the SI key that was created before. Pattern version has been incremented by a major version number.

Sybase.OpenServer

23156 12741 HP Application Security Center WebInspect pattern was missing the publishers information in its metadata - this interferes with reports requiring this information. Pattern metadata updated with publisher information.

HP.ApplicationSecurityCenter.WebInspect

N/A 12751 Symantec VERITAS Storage Foundation pattern will have versions set to 'None' if license information not obtained following the fix to issue #12550 (TKU Nov 2009). Pattern code now fixed.

Symantec.VERITAS.StorageFoundation

N/A 12767 BMC Control-M Agent Tracker pattern havs a key_group that has type/host.key added to it which is not required since this is always implicitly added to the SI key that the system generates. Pattern updated so that grouping is based on either path and version obtained or version obtained.

BMC.CONTROLM

N/A 12768 Problem: In the BMC CONTROL-M Agent Listener pattern, the retrieval of values from the Windows Registry are not correctly linked to instance as any instance name given in the trigger process path is completely ignored. Solution: Instance name extracted from trigger process path and used to seed the retrieval of values from the Windows Registry.

Extended Data Pack

Product Lifecycle Patterns

You can use Tideway Foundation / BMC Atrium Discovery 8.x and OS / Software product lifecycle data to:

  • Identify operating systems and software that are exposed to security / stability risks as they are no longer supported by patch updates
  • Identify operating systems and software that you may may be paying a premium maintenance subscription for
  • Identify operating systems and software that are no longer shipping so may increase costs and risks associated with variance

Operating System Product Lifecycle Patterns
TKU 2009-Dec-1 includes product life cycle patterns providing End Of Life, End Of Support and End Of Extended Support dates for:

  • 11 publishers
  • 17 operating systems
  • 177 operating system versions

Go to the OS Product Life Cycle Patterns - TKU 2009-Dec-1 page for a full list of products included in this release.

Software Product Lifecycle Patterns
This TKU includes product life cycle patterns providing End Of Life, End Of Support and End Of Extended Support dates for:

  • 33 publishers
  • 242 software products
  • 1,298 software product versions

Go to the Software Product Life Cycle Patterns - TKU 2009-Dec-1 page for a full list of products included in this release.

Hardware Reference Data

You can use Tideway Foundation hardware reference data to:

  • Identify servers that can be expanded in situations where space is a constraining factor in the data center
  • Identify server refresh / rationalization candidates in situations where cooling is a constraining factor in the data center
  • Identify server refresh / rationalization candidates in situations where power is a constraining factor in the data center

This TKU includes hardware reference data providing Rack Size, Power Consumption, Heat Output and Maximum Memory capacity for:

  • 9 manufacturers
  • 408 server models
  • 1,213 server model configurations

Go to the Hardware Reference Data - TKU 2009-Dec-1 page for a full list of products included in this release.
