EMC VMAX, VNX (SAN), Symmetrix and CLARiiON Storage Systems

EMC storage systems are discovered via the EMC Solutions Enabler management software. As part of routine discovery, when the EMC Solutions Enabler management software is encountered, an EMC CIM Object Manager software instance is created.  The management software is interrogated to discover any storage entities that it is managing. Once discovered, the storage entities are modeled in BMC Discovery.

Prerequisites

The management software is either installed on a standalone server or embedded. You can use either of the following method depending on your environment.

Storage System with Management Servers (standalone):

  • Host credentials for the host on which the EMC Solutions Enabler management software is running.
  • ECOM credentials: Log into https://<SolutionsEnablerIP>:5989/ecomconfig to test connectivity and create new credentials using the ‘monitor’ role. These credentials should be entered as WBEM credentials for the Solution Enabler’s IP address.

  • Network access on a WBEM port (5988 for http, 5989 for https) from the BMC Discovery server to the EMC Solutions Enabler Server.

It is assumed that the EMC Solutions Enabler and EMC SMI-S Provider are installed and configured. If this is not the case, documentation links for installation and configuration are provided below.

Note:
  • EMC supports PowerMax and VMAX3 systems only in version 8 or higher of the SMI-S Provider and Solutions Enabler.
  • EMC supports CLARiiON and VNX systems only up to version 4.6.x of the SMI-S Provider (Solutions Enabler v7.6.x).
  • Other Symmetrix systems are supported by both version 4.6.x of the SMI-S Provider (Solutions Enabler v7.6.x) and version 8 or higher of the SMI-S Provider and Solutions Enabler.

Embedded Providers:

Symmetrix systems can also be discovered by their embedded providers:

  • Embedded SMI-S credentials:  Log into https://<Embedded Provider-IP>:5989/ecomconfig to test connectivity and create new credentials using the ‘monitor’ role. These credentials should be entered as WBEM credentials for the storage systems’ IP address.
  • Network access on a WBEM port (5988 for http, 5989 for https) from the BMC Discovery server to the embedded SMI-S provider.
Note:

By default, the remote monitoring of Symmetrix storage systems is disabled. To enable the discovery of Symmetrix storage systems, set the 'disable remote symmetrix' option to false.

The minimum user role required is 'monitor'.
