CentOS 6 replaces Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 in BMC Discovery 11.2

The upgrade to BMC Discovery 11.2 replaces Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 with CentOS 6. CentOS is an enterprise-class Linux platform which is derived from, and aims to be functionally compatible with its upstream source, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

As CentOS is derived from, and aims to be functionally compatible with its upstream source, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, BMC performs the same testing against the Red Hat 6 STIGs.

When applying OS upgrades to BMC Discovery 11.2, ensure that you download and apply the Latest CentOS 6 operating system upgrade.

Latest RHEL 6 operating system upgrade

The latest BMC Discovery Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 OS upgrade includes all applicable Red Hat updates up to 13th August, 2019.

TKU and OSU release timing changes

To provide a more predictable release cadence for our customers the timing of the monthly TKU and OSU releases is changing. Starting in July 2019, BMC will publish the latest TKU and OSU on the first Wednesday of the month. As a result of this transition there was no TKU or OSU in June. What would have been released at the end of June has been published on the first Wednesday of July. Moving forward our customers can expect TKU and OSU to release every first Wednesday of the month.

The OS upgrade supports the installed BMC Discovery (64 bit architecture) virtual appliances on RHEL 6. The following file is available from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site for 64 bit architecture:

    • ADDM_OS_Upgrade_64_6.19.08.13_776752_ga.sh.gz

    New packages, with version numbers:

    • kernel-2.6.32-754.18.2.el6
    • kernel-firmware-2.6.32-754.18.2.el6
    • kernel-headers-2.6.32-754.18.2.el6

This OSU and the June OSU include the fix to DRUD1-25679, which was also fixed in BMC Discovery 11.3.00.5 as DRUD1-12979

In the February 2019 and subsequent OSUs, the Oracle JDK was replaced with the Red Hat and CentOS supported OpenJDK.

    JDK packages included:

    • tw-jdk5-22-11

    • tw-jdk8-999-1.openjdk

This is unchanged from the previous release.

The OS release included in this update is 6.10. This is unchanged from the previous release.

The following table shows the complete list of the OS specific packages that will be present on a 64 bit Enterprise Edition of BMC Discovery after the latest OS upgrade has been installed.

    3. I recently applied this OS upgrade after installing 11.0.2 from scratch.  Should the release number at the bottom of the UI not be reflected after an update?  I assumed it would go from 632444 to 637206, but it hasn't.  I received a message that the upgrade completed successfully and the packages look like they've been updated.  I even rebooted again to see if that'd make a different, but it didn't.  Should I be concerned?

    4. Hi Jeff,

The release number reflects the build of the BMC Discovery release, so it won't change with an OS upgrade.

You can tell which OS upgrade is applied using Help > About which displays an About BMC Discovery page. The About BMC Discovery page shows the version number and edition, the Devices file version (from TKU) and the OS update package installed.

You can also determine the OS update package from the command line by entering:

      rpm -q tideway-appliance

I'll add this to the OSU documentation.

      Hope this helps,

      Duncan.

      1. Thanks for the explanation Duncan.  I really appreciate it!

    5. You're welcome. New page here.

      Duncan.

    6. Hi Ducan,

Are there any instructions(commands) and troubleshooting documents available for OSU Updgrades?

      Thanks,

      Surya
