21.05 (12.2) enhancements
BMC Discovery 21.05 (12.2) runs on CentOS 7. You can upgrade directly to BMC Discovery version 21.05 (12.2) from version 11.3 if the version 11.3 appliance is running on CentOS 7. If the 11.3 appliance was upgraded from an earlier version and it is running on CentOS 6, you must install BMC Discovery 21.05 (12.2) and then migrate your data. To migrate your data, you must back up the CentOS 6 based appliance and restore it to a new BMC Discovery appliance running on CentOS 7.
If you are new to BMC Discovery, we recommend that you see Getting started as an introduction to using the product.
Review the BMC Discovery 21.05 (12.2) enhancements for features that will benefit your organization and to understand changes that might impact your users.Discover Windows hosts by using PowerShell
BMC Discovery uses PowerShell on Windows hosts to perform an in-depth discovery of the host. PowerShell is a cross-platform command line shell and scripting language that performs almost the same way as UNIX and Linux discovery.
BMC Discovery provides a PowerShell credential option to discover a Windows host in preference to using other Windows credentials, such as WMI and RemQuery. The PowerShell credential connects to the host's PowerShell API using HTTPS. The appliance can accomplish this discovery without the need for a Windows proxy or BMC Discovery Outpost.
PowerShell is also used in an experimental feature to discover Windows hosts in AWS that uses SSM discovery; it is disabled by default. See Configuring discovery settings for information on enabling discovery of Windows hosts in AWS.
For more information, see Discovering Windows hosts with PowerShell and Adding credentials.
Discover container platforms by using API providers
BMC Discovery provides API providers to discover container platforms like Kubernetes and OpenShift. These API providers enable efficient access to the container platform APIs. Support for new APIs can be added through the monthly TKU releases.
For more information, see Adding credentials.
New service modeling capabilities for SAAM
Start anywhere application modeling (SAAM) is enhanced to enable modeling of Business Services and Business Services (Technical) in addition to modeling Business Application Instances.
A Business Service is a service that one business or organization provides to another business or organization, such as an E-mail service or order processing. A Business Service (Technical) includes a service that an IT organization provides to support business services or IT operations, such as a self-service help desk.
For more information, see Start anywhere application modeling.
There are also some modeling changes to support the new Service Modeling capabilities. For more information, see Model changes.
Support for new REST API endpoints
You can use the new REST API endpoints for data import and general data manipulation. The endpoints help you find the best candidate hosts and other root nodes by using the identity weighting algorithm. For more information, see Endpoints in the REST API.
Support for new TPL functions
The new TPL functions make it easier to handle JSON data and expose the node identity algorithm. You can also create and manipulate nodes that are not defined in the taxonomy. For more information, see What's new in TPL.
Changes to predefined reports
For information about changes that have been made to the predefined reports provided in the product, see Report changes.
FIPS enabled BMC Discovery Outposts and Windows proxies
In Windows, when the FIPS mode is enabled, the BMC Discovery Outpost and Windows proxies use the fully compliant and certified OpenSSL implementation (the OpenSSL FIPS module).
