Viewing discovery status

The status of the discovery and the reasoning process is displayed on the Home page in the Discovery Status summary.

To view discovery status

The Discovery Status page is the central point for running discovery. It contains the following:

Discovery summary—shows the current status of discovery. Use this to diagnose where credential failures are occurring and to see transient failures and where nodes are aging. Non-zero totals link to a list view page of the total. Shows the following totals:
- Successes—successfully scanned devices. If multiple node kinds are found, a multi kind list is displayed.
- Transient failures—endpoints previously scanned for which there is one No Response or No Access discovery access result. When endpoints in this state are scanned again and there is another No Response or No Access discovery result, the endpoint is moved to the No responses category.
- Credential failures—endpoints which can be contacted but for which the credential is invalid.
- Identity changes—endpoints which appear to have changed identity.
- No responses—endpoints previously scanned which are not responding and are aging out of the model.
  This field was labeled "Aging" in the BMC Discovery 11.0 release before patch 1.
Runs and ranges tabs:
- Currently Processing Runs—Shows the first 10 runs that are in progress.
- Recent Runs—Shows the 10 most recently completed runs.
- Scheduled Runs—Lists scheduled runs.
- Exclude Ranges—Shows the first 10 excluded ranges and enables you to add new exclude ranges.
Add New run—Click to add a new snapshot or scheduled discovery run.
Add New Exclude—Click to add a new exclude range.

To display the Discovery Status page, from the main menu, click Manage > Discovery. The Discovery Status page shows a large green RUNNING or red STOPPED icon to show the current state. It also provides a START ALL SCANS button or a STOP ALL SCANS button, depending on whether BMC Discovery is running.

Note

By default, the discovery process is off. To start it, you must click START ALL SCANS. If a passphrase has been set on the credential vault, you must supply that before you can start discovery.

Record and playback modes are for diagnostic support and testing. If one of these modes is in operation, a label is displayed the right side of the page. For more information, see discovery settings.

Consolidation

An appliance can be configured to be either a consolidation appliance or a scanning appliance. Consolidation refers to the centralization of discovery data from scheduled or snapshot scans on multiple scanning appliances, to one or more consolidation appliances. Currently processing runs

The Currently Processing Runs tab shows the first 10 discovery runs that are in progress. The tab contains the following fields:

Field name	Details
Label	The descriptive label that is applied to the run by the user who created it.
Started	The scan start time. This time is when the discovery run was requested, rather than the actual start time. In practice, these times are almost identical; the only time that a large discrepancy is seen is when a discovery run is requested at the end or outside of a scan window.
Range	The IP address range that is being scanned in this discovery run. For a large list of IP addresses, the range shows the first two IP addresses and the number of other IP addresses in the queue.
# of IPs	The total number of IP addresses being scanned in this discovery run.
Type	One of the following scans: • Open • Scheduled • Snapshot
Level	One of the following levels: • Sweep Scan—Performs a sweep scan, trying to determine what is at each endpoint in the scan range. It will attempt to login to a device to determine the device type. • Full Discovery—Retrieves all default information for hosts, and complete full inference.
Percent Complete	A progress indicator showing how much of the scan has been competed and how many are in progress.
User	The user name of the user who created the scan.

If a discovery run is in progress but has been stopped because the scan window in which it can take place has ended, it is on hold. On hold scans are shown on the Currently Processing Runs tab and are marked as such.
You can select a discovery run and cancel it using Cancel. The discovery run stops, although individual commands in progress continue to run to completion.

Recent runs

The Recent Runs tab shows the 10 most recently completed discovery runs, and contains the following fields:

Field name	Details
Label	The descriptive label that is applied to the run by the user who created it.
Range	The IP address range that was scanned in this discovery run.
# of IPs	The total number of IP addresses scanned in this discovery run.
Timing	The scan start time, finish time, and elapsed time. This time is when the discovery run was requested, rather than the actual start time. In practice, these times are almost identical; the only time a large discrepancy is seen is when the discovery run is requested at the end or outside or a scan window.
Complete	States whether the scan was completed or canceled by the user.
Type	The type of scan: • Open • Scheduled • Snapshot
Level	One of the following levels: • Sweep Scan—Performs a sweep scan, trying to determine what is at each endpoint in the scan range. It will attempt to login to a device to determine the device type. • Full Discovery—Retrieves all default information for hosts, and complete full inference.
User	The name of the user who created the scan.
Actions	A Rescan Now button is provided in this column, enabling you to rescan the discovery run. If you rescan a scheduled scan, it is scanned immediately as a snapshot scan with the same label.

Scheduled runs

The Scheduled Runs tab shows up to 10 scheduled discovery runs, and contains the following fields:

Field name	Details
Selection column	For each row in the Scheduled Runs tab, a check box is provided, enabling you to select individual scheduled runs. Selecting the check box in the heading row selects all runs on the tab.
Label	The descriptive label that is applied to the run by the user who created it.
IP Range	The IP address range to be scanned in this discovery run.
Level	One of the following levels: • Sweep Scan—Performs a sweep scan, trying to determine what is at each endpoint in the scan range. It will attempt to login to a device to determine the device type. • Full Discovery—Retrieves all default information for hosts, and complete full inference.
Date Rules	Describes the schedule for this discovery run: the days on which the discovery run takes place, the time it starts, and the period during which the scan is permitted to run.
State	The scan start time.
Enabled	Whether the scheduled run is enabled or disabled. Yes for enabled, No for disabled.
User	The name of the user who created the run.
Created	The date that the scheduled run was created.
Actions	A Scan Now button is provided in this column, enabling you to scan the discovery run. If you scan a scheduled scan, it is scanned immediately as a snapshot scan with the same label.

You can enable, disable, or delete selected scheduled runs by using the Enable, Disable, or Delete button at the foot of the table. See scheduled runs for more information about enabling and disabling scheduled runs. Disabling a scheduled run that is in progress cancels that run.

Exclude ranges

The Exclude Ranges tab shows the ranges that have been specified as not to be scanned, and contains the following fields:

Field name	Details
Selection column	For each row in the Exclude Ranges tab, a check box is provided, enabling you to select individual scheduled runs. Selecting the check box in the heading row selects all exclude ranges in the tab.
Label	The descriptive label that is applied to the exclude range.
Range	The IP address range that is not to be scanned in any discovery run.
Description	A description for the exclude range.
Date Rules	The date and time rules for which this exclude range is in force. If it is not a scheduled exclude, Always is displayed.
User	The user who created the exclude range.

You can delete selected exclude ranges by using the Delete button at the foot of the table.
