Using and customizing dashboards
Dashboards provide predefined views of your modeled IT infrastructure. The following sections describe how you can use and customize dashboards in BMC Discovery.
The following section lists the types of dashboard that are available in the product by default for displaying status and quick-review information:
The Default dashboard provides a concise summary of the BMC Discovery view of your IT infrastructure.
|Cloud overview||The Cloud Overview dashboard provides a concise summary of cloud providers, cloud regions, cloud services and administrative collections. It shows reports of unscanned cloud hosts.|
The Baseline Dashboard provides information and reports to help you in baselining a data center.
CMDB Sync Status
The CMDB Sync Status dashboard provides information on the CMDB Synchronization process and each configured connection. Click any row to see the CMDB Connection Status page for that connection.
The Discovery dashboard provides information on the current status of the results of discovery.
Hardware Reference Data
The Hardware Reference Data dashboard provides information on the physical and thermal characteristics of the hosts in your IT Infrastructure.
Host Network Summary
The Host Network Summary dashboard provides the following information on the network connectivity of hosts in your IT Infrastructure.
The Host Overview dashboard provides the following information on the numbers of hosts, the distribution of host types, and the memory and compute power of hosts in your IT infrastructure. Compute power is a rough guide to the power of a host and is determined by multiplying the the clock speed by the number of logical CPUs.
OS Product Lifecycle Analysis
The OS Product Lifecycle Analysis Dashboard provides the following information on the OS breakdown on the hosts in your IT Infrastructure. It also provides information about the proximity to those operating systems' end of life.
The Operating Systems dashboard provides the OS types and versions as well as links to detailed reports on patches and kernels.
The Server Consolidation dashboard highlights hosts in your environment that are candidates for consolidation. This is particularly useful when you are planning a data center consolidation project, because it highlights the areas in which you can make the greatest gains.
Software products - Apache Webserver
The Apache Webserver dashboard provides charts that show information on the Apache webservers in your IT infrastructure.
Software products - Oracle
The Oracle dashboard provides information on the Oracle versions and the servers on which they run in your IT infrastructure.
Software Products Lifecycle Analysis
The Software Product Lifecycle Analysis Dashboard provides information on the software products in your IT Infrastructure. It also provides information about proximity to those software products' end of life.
Software Products Summary
The Software Products Summary dashboard provides information about software products identified on your network, the categories of software products identified, and database versions. It also has links to detailed reports about Data Center Standardization Software, Software Inventory, and Database Reports.
The Virtualization dashboard provides an overview of software running on virtual machines, and the physical hosts on which the virtual machines are hosted.
Using and customizing dashboards
You can view any of the dashboards configured on your appliance by clicking the Available Dashboards icon from the dynamic toolbox on the Home page and choosing a dashboard from the menu.
The content in the individual sections shown on the Home page is referred to as a channel. A variety of content types is available for use in channels. For example, in addition to standard BMC Discovery reports, you can also configure RSS feeds, web feeds, and video content, as shown in the following illustrations:

Channels are created using Administration > Channels.
To create a dashboard
Select the Copy current Dashboard link from the Dashboard drop-down panel.
A copy of the dashboard is saved. The new dashboard contains an Edit link that enables you to add or remove sections and rename the dashboard, if needed.
Channels on Reports Pages
You can include any of the other channels on the report page in a dashboard; for example, you can add a few favorite reports to your dashboard. See Reporting basics for a list of reports that you can add.
To edit a dashboard
Select the Copy current Dashboard link from the Dashboard drop-down panel, or select an existing copy of the dashboard from the Dashboard drop-down panel.
The copy of the dashboard displays an Edit link that enables you to add or remove sections and rename the dashboard, if needed.
Changes you make to the layout or content of a dashboard are immediately available to all users. The dashboard that you are viewing is saved in your session and is displayed the next time you log on.
To add, rename, or remove a channel to an editable dashboard
- Click the Edit link in the main page title.
- On the channels selector panel, rename the dashboard by using the Dashboard Title field.
The existing dashboard is renamed rather than being saved as a copy under a new name.
- Click Commit to change the name.
- Select or deselect a channel to add it to (or remove it from) the dashboard.
Changes that you make are immediate and are available to all other users.
To move a channel
You can move a channel in the default view of an editable dashboard by dragging it to the new location.
- Move the cursor over the header of the channel.
The cursor changes to a four-pointed selector.
- Drag the channel to a new location and drop it in the correct place.
