Viewing a host
All hosts are set up automatically by BMC Discovery.
To view a host
- From the main menu, select Explore > Data.
The Infrastructure page opens.
- In the Hosts & Containers section, click Hosts.
- Select a host from the list.
The BMC Discovery Host page groups the field names in a logical format.
The information fields for a host object are arranged in the following groups:
- General Details—General information about the host such as its name, type, and hosted applications. For more information, see General Details.
- Identity—Information about FQDN and domain. For more information, see Identity.
- Ownership & Location—Information about the ownership and location of the host. For more information, see Ownership & Location.
- Operating System—The OS and service pack of this host. For more information, see Operating System.
- Hardware and Network—Information about the physical hardware installed on the host, and network information. For more information, see Hardware and Network.
- Inference—The inference details. For more information, see Inference.
- Other—For more information, see Other.
You can also display provenance information by clicking the Show Provenance button. Provenance information is meta information describing how the other information came to exist. For more information, see Provenance Information.
The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the General Details group for a host object.
General information fields for a host object
Name of this host system. A link is also provided that generates a pdf Host Profile. Click this to generate the Host Profile, and then download it by clicking the Reports tab. For more information, see Host Profile.
The type of the host, such as UNIX Server, Windows Desktop, and so on.
The vendor of this host.
Whether the host is running on a partition.
A link to the host or list of hosts that this host is communicating with.
Whether this host is a virtual machine. Displayed only when true.

The hosted applications on this host.
The Software Instances related to this host. Click the link to view the related Software Instances.
If storage systems are managed by the host, they are also displayed. Click the link to view the Storage System List page.
Aggregate Software Instances

The names of the virtual machines that run on this host; created by the VMware pattern.
The containing host for the virtual machines on this host; that is, the chassis in which it runs.
The containing virtual machines for this host; that is, the virtualization software and server that this host is on.
Zonename of this host system; for Solaris zones only.
The zone UUID of this host system; for Solaris zones only.
The container for this host; that is, the machine on which it runs.
The name of the cluster; applicable only if this host is a member of a cluster of host machines.
E10K SSP Hostname
The name of the host on which the E10K System Service Processor runs.
The SunFire domain name.
The LDOM in which this host is running.
Power LPAR Number
The number of the LPAR on which the host is running.
Configuration files for this host.

The fully qualified domain name which is local to the host.
The DNS domain that this host is part of.
The name of the NIS or Windows domain that this host is in.

Endpoint Used To Be Identified As
If the endpoint used to discover this host was previously identified as a different host, a link to that host and a link to a comparison with that host are provided.
Endpoint Now Identified As
If the endpoint used to discover this host is now identified as a different host, a link to that host and a link to a comparison with that host are provided.
Ownership & Location
The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Ownership & Location group for a host object.

OS Support Details
Operating System Support details. Provides the dates for the OS End of Life, End of Support, and End of Extended Support. Clicking any of the links displays the Hardware Reference Data page for that host type. For more information, see OS Support Page.
Hardware and Network
The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Hardware and Network group for a host object.
Starting with version 10.0, BMC Discovery includes separate attributes for physical and logical RAM on host nodes.

Model number of this host.
Serial number of this host.
Unique Host Id
ID of this host, found by the discovery system.
The UUID of this host.
Amount of RAM available to the OS on a host, measured in MB.
Amount of RAM installed to the OS on a host, measured in MB.
Provides basic details on the processor and links to the Processor Info page for the processor. In the case of systems with more than one processor, where they are not all the same types, the page displays an entry for each processor type.
Type—The processor type. For example, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz.
Number of Logical Processors—The number of logical processors.
Number of Cores—The number of processor cores.
Number of Sockets—The number of sockets.
Power Supply Status
BMC Discovery can identify which hosts have a single PSU, those that have one or more failed PSUs, and those for which PSU information is unavailable. Discovery detects the power supply or power supplies for each host and displays the status of each PSU as OK or FAILED on the Host page. If the presence of a PSU is detected, but not its state, that PSU is shown as UNKNOWN.
Hardware Reference Data
A table of information about the physical details of this host; for example, the hardware's size in rack units, its power capacity, and its thermal characteristics. Clicking any of the links displays the Hardware Reference Data page for that host type. For more information, see Hardware Reference Data page.
A detailed view of the network interface or interfaces discovered on this host. For more information, see Networking Interfaces field.
The HBA interface or interfaces discovered on this host. For more information, see HBA modeling.
A detailed view of the file system for this host. For more information, see File System field.
Primary Domain Controller
The name of the primary domain controller.
The processor information fields are populated with discovered data, with the exception of the Cores per Processor and Threads per Processor Core attributes. These are taken from the CPU manufacturers specifications, as discovering this information directly can be unreliable. To cater for new CPU releases, the data to populate these attributes is updated when necessary and released with TKU updates. The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Inference group for a host object.
Inference information fields for a host object
Lists Discovery Accesses for this host, grouped by scan date. When an endpoint is scanned, a Discovery Access node is created. The Discovery Access node records information such as the start time, end time, the Discovery Run of which this is a part, and the previous Discovery Access to simplify troubleshooting. Clicking a Discovery Access displays the DiscoveryAccess page for that Discovery Access. Where a Discovery Access is about to be deleted as part of DDD aging, a trash can icon is displayed next to the Discovery Access.

Last successful CMDB sync
The time and date at which this host was last successfully synchronized into the CMDB.
Last failed CMDB sync
The time and date at which this host was last unsuccessfully synchronized into the CMDB.
CMDB sync duration
The time (in seconds) spent performing the last CMDB synchronization for this host.
CMDB CI count
The number of CIs corresponding to this host at the last CMDB synchronization.
CMDB Relationship count
The number of relationships to CIs corresponding to this host at the last CMDB synchronization.

The data in BMC Discovery is read-only. BMC strongly recommends that you do not edit any nodes because your version will not be retained by BMC Discovery.
To run host reports
A number of context-sensitive reports are available for hosts. For more information and examples of these host-related reports, see Host Reports.
Network Interfaces field
The Network Interfaces field contains information about the host's network interfaces and their settings. The display of network information shows IPv4 and IPv6 data and complex configurations such as bonded interfaces. For each interface, the following information is shown:
The name of the network interface, which is also a link to the page for that IP address.
The IP address, which is also a link to the page for that IP address.
The MAC address of the network interface, which is also a link to the page for that network interface.
The interface name (eth0, eth1), which is also a link to the page for that network interface. A red x icon is displayed where an interface has some mismatch (speed, duplex, or negotiation) with the network device that it is connected to.
The network device that the network interface is connected to. A red x icon is displayed where the network device port has some mismatch (speed, duplex, or negotiation) with the interface connected to it.
Click Show Details to reveal more information about the network interfaces. Where a mismatch has been flagged in the Interface or Connected To fields, the reason is highlighted as shown in the following screens.|
The layout of the blocks indicates the configuration of the interfaces. For example, the following screen shows multiple IP addresses spanned by a single MAC address.
Mismatches between hosts and network devices are highlighted.
The following screen shows the same interface after clicking Show Details to show additional information and reveal the reason for the highlighted mismatch.
Network interface notes
- Hyper-V Windows virtual machines (VMs) always report NIC speed as 10 GBps regardless of the actual speed. Consequently, for Hyper-V Windows VMs, the host and switch mismatch field shows incorrect results.
- In a non-administrator user discovery of a Windows 2003 host using WMI, the
Manufacturerattribute of the network interfaces is not populated.
driver_versionattributes are not set for Windows NT4 systems. The information is not stored in the registry as in later versions of Windows.
File Systems field
The File Systems field contains information about the local, exported, and remote file systems mounted on the host.
The links in each row link to the File System node page for that file system. The first displays a LOCAL file system node. The second displays a node EXPORTED from one host linked to a REMOTE node from another (the nfs file system from the client and server point of view).
The following table lists the information fields for a File System node.
File system name.
The kind of file system; can be LOCAL, EXPORTED, or REMOTE.
The type of file system; for example, ext3, tmpfs, NTFS, cifs.
The file system mount point.
The size of the file system.
The amount of the file system that is used.
The percentage of the file system that is used field and the following fields are highlighted yellow when 81% or more of the capacity is used, and red when 91% or more of the capacity is used. This percentage can be seen in the VMware ESXi 4.0.0 preceding example.
The amount of free space remaining.
The percentage of the file system that is free.
The name of the host on which the file system is mounted.
Details about the disk drive holding the file system; may be Physical, Virtual, or SAN.
BMC Discovery reports the size and free percentage of the file system. In some file systems, part of the space is reserved for root (or similar) access and is not usable by general users. Thus, the reported size and free space might exceed that available to general users.
