CMDB Sync Preview

When the CMDB synchronization is configured, you can preview the synchronization results for a set of items using CMDB Sync Preview action. This action is available for hosts, network devices, printers, and some other nodes. You can model the graph of the CIs and relationships that will be populated into the CMDB after synchronization.

This topic contains the following information about viewing and managing the CMDB Sync Preview view:

Launching the CMDB Sync Preview

The  CMDB Sync Preview is only supported in modern standards-compliant web browsers. It works best in recent versions of Chrome and Firefox, and it is also supported in Internet Explorer version 10 and later. It is not supported in Internet Explorer 9 or earlier.

You can open CMDB Sync Preview for a custom set of nodes by selecting them in the object list and then using CMDB Sync Preview action. By default, the CMDB Sync Preview is maximized.

The following example shows the CMDB Sync Preview of two hosts that were selected manually:

Applying CMDB Filtering

As a part of CMDB Synchronisation configuration for any CMDB connection, the data might be filtered to trim the unwanted elements that should not be synchronized to BMC Atrium CMDB.

As there might be more than one CMDB connection, and filters might vary, CMDB Sync Preview shows data with no filters applied by default.

To see CMDB Sync Preview for the particular CMDB connection, select the necessary CMDB connection in the Apply CMDB Filtering list and click Refresh Filtering. The preview adjusts to mark the filtered data.

Explicitly/implicitly filtered objects

Some CIs might be implicitly filtered if they do not match a filtering condition directly, but have a relationship with a CI that does.

Implicitly and implicitly filtered objects are highlighted on the graph:

Viewing key CMDB Sync Preview information

To view the key that explains colors and shapes of the nodes and relationships, as well as navigation basics, click following icon:

Below is an example of the information that is provided:

Minimizing and maximizing software context view

You can toggle the CMDB Sync Preview window size by switching to a floating pop-up dialog (-) or to a maximized docked panel at the top of the Object Details page (+).

Example of the maximized CMDB Sync Preview for a host node is displayed below:

Zooming and moving items around

In both docked (maximized) and floating (minimized) views, use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out, and drag on the background to move around. On a touch device, pinch to zoom. Double-click inside the view to recenter and zoom the display to fit the window. Drag the background to move the whole diagram. Drag individual icons to rearrange the view.

Filtering the software context

In the maximized view, you can filter the information shown on the CMDB Sync Preview by showing/hiding nodes of some types.

Click on the Show/Hide list, select the node types that you would like to be displayed and deselect those that should be hidden.

Showing labels

The labels are visible only in the maximized view. Tick Show labels to show the text label for every node. When labels are hidden, the view is more compact and relationships directions might look clearer. You can see the label hint when you hover over the node.

Changing the CMDB Sync Preview layout

In the maximized view, you can auto-arrange the nodes and relationships layout using the following templates:

  • Switch wide/tall— Optimizes the graph for horizontal/vertical view.
  • Force-directed— Arranges nodes so that the impacting nodes have more central position than the impacted ones.
  • Impact— Levels the impacted objects in several layers depending on the impact depth.

You can also drag nodes manually to tune the layout for the best fit for your specific case.
