Creating a BMC Digital Workplace Catalog installation options file

Before you can install BMC Digital Workplace Catalog, you must create a text file that provides the required information about the Linux server and database server for the installation.

Before you begin

Collect the information about the Linux server and database server on the Installation worksheets for BMC Digital Workplace Catalog.

Extract the installation archive files as described in Extracting the downloaded archive.

Providing options for the installation

To install BMC Digital Workplace Catalog, you must provide the details about the Linux server and database server that you collected in the Installation worksheets for BMC Digital Workplace Catalog. After you extract the files from the installation package, you can edit the options.txt file from the package. The second file, advanced-options.txt, contains the required options in the options.txt file as well as additional options for you to customize the installation.

If you are editing the options files on a Windows computer, use a text editor that supports UNIX line endings.

Contains the minimal set of installation parameters, so you can enter values for only the necessary parameters. The reduced option set provides a simpler installation experience by implementing default values based on a typical installation.

Contains the complete set of installation options (minimal and advanced), so you can customize the installation process to match the specifics of your environment. You can copy only the parameters from the advanced-options.txt file that you need to customize the installation.

To edit the installation options file

You can edit the options.txt file directly on the Linux server where you will install BMC Digital Workplace Catalog, but the following steps show another approach where you create the installation options file on your local machine to upload to the Linux server afterward.

  1. Download the options.txt file to a local computer, and rename it.
  2. In a text editor, edit the files to update the settings based on the values in the installation worksheets.
  3. (Optional) If you are installing into a cluster, create a different file for each server to identify the server to be installed. Provide values for the following parameters that are specific to each server.

Parameter name and descriptionParameter to add in the options fileExamples

BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server instance name

When installing on servers in a cluster, specify the name of the cluster alias as the <BMC_DWP_SERVER_NAME> parameter.

Note: The alias can be any valid name, but you must use the same name for all servers in the cluster.

For more information about aliases, see Understanding server group naming .

    -J BMC_DWP_SERVER_NAME=dwp-catalog-ha-server-group

BMC Digital Workplace Catalog server host name

When installing on servers in a cluster, specify the fully qualified domain name of specific primary or secondary as the <BMC_DWP_SERVER_HOST_NAME> parameter.

    Application database overwrite existing data

When installing on secondary servers in a cluster, add the the <BMC_DATABASE_OPTION> parameter with an empty value.

    -J BMC_DATABASE_OPTION=(empty value)

To customize the installation options file

If you need to customize server or port settings to accommodate your environment, copy only the required fields from the advanced-options.txt file. You do not need to edit the advanced-options.txt file directly.

For a detailed reference about the installation parameters, see BMC Digital Workplace Catalog installation parameter reference.

Parameter prefix descriptions

An installation options file contains parameters prefaced by -P-J, and -A, which are explained in the following table:

-J BMC_DWP_PASSWORD=<main administrator password>

-J BMC_DWP_SERVER_NAME=dwpcatalog-server-01

The only valid value:

Where to go from here

When you have completed the installation options file, you are ready to install BMC Digital Workplace Catalog. Upload the installation options file to the appropriate server into a folder in a location that is available to the installation script, and proceed to the next task:
