Installing BMC Digital Workplace


This section describes how to install the BMC Digital Workplace application for administering the end user request experience. For information about setting up the application to support the enhanced catalog, see Installing BMC Digital Workplace Catalog

Best practice

BMC recommends installing BMC Digital Workplace on a dedicated server. To avoid issues and to improve performance, do not install on servers that host other applications, such as BMC Remedy Mid Tier.
For full operation, BMC Digital Workplace  requires integration with BMC Remedy IT Service Management (ITSM) version 9.1.00 or later.


The BMC Digital Workplace installation comprises the following stages:

Before you begin

Complete the steps in Planning to plan your BMC Digital Workplace deployment. The planning section includes information about system requirements and sizing your environment.

Stage 1: Prepare for installation 

Complete the following tasks:

The planning spreadsheet provided in this section helps you gather these parameter values. To avoid installation errors, refer to this spreadsheet when you run the installation.
2Downloading the BMC Digital Workplace installation filesThis topic explains how to obtain the files that you need for installation from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site.
3Install 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 8.

Install on all the servers where you will install BMC Digital Workplace . Set the Java Home path.

4 Precreating the database

If you have database access restrictions and cannot allow the BMC Digital Workplace to create a database, a DBA can create a pre-existing database.

5(Linux) Requirements for a non-root user to run the installerIf a non-root user will run the installer in a Linux environment, a system administrator must set the needed permissions.
6Installing the ITSM integration patch

Before you install BMC Digital Workplace , you must install the BMC Digital Workplace ITSM integration patch on your BMC Remedy ITSM server. This patch enables BMC Remedy ITSM to work with BMC Digital Workplace . Without this patch, timelines, email notifications, and social features will not work in BMC Digital Workplace .

Note: If you have installed BMC Remedy ITSM 18.08 Patch 1, and also downloaded and installed the Remedy ITSM Version 18.08.00 Patch 001 Deployment Management Package for BMC Digital Workplace 18.11.00 patch, you do not need to download and install the BMC Digital Workplace ITSM Integration Patch Version 18.05.00 patch from the BMC Digital Workplace installation files.

7(Linux) Installing the package to launch the UI installer (on Linux)

On a Linux environment, to invoke the UI installer for installing BMC Digital Workplace , you must download a package containing Xorg libraries.

  1. Install BMC Digital Workplace  on the primary server. Specify the with In a New Cluster option during installation.
  2. Install BMC Digital Workplace  on the secondary server. Specify the with In an Existing Cluster option during installation.

 

Installing BMC Digital Workplace silently

Silent installation reads the parameters provided in the options.txt file and installs BMC Digital Workplace  without launching a wizard.

2Resolve issues indicated by the installer, if any.

The installer performs the following pre-install checks before proceeding with the installation:

  • Disk space
  • JAVA runtime version
  • Database version
  • Directory permissions
  • BMC Digital Workplace installed version
  • Components operation status

Installation does not proceed if the pre-install check detects inconsistencies in the required components.

Stage 3: Configure BMC Digital Workplace

Perform the following tasks before you validate that installation was successful.

This section describes the tasks to be performed after installing BMC Digital Workplace . It includes the following topics:

  • Configuring SSL for the Tomcat serverTo provide communication security among applications, configure SSL for the Apache Tomcat server. If you enabled SSL as part of the installation, SSL is already configured.

When a user logs on to a mobile device, the user is prompted to enter the hostname and port. If the server has Remedy SSO enabled, the mobile client opens a browser to the Remedy SSO login page. The Remedy SSO server sets the SSO cookies after authentication on to the device browser.   • Modifying ports for BMC Digital WorkplaceThis topic provides instructions to change the Product name inclusions library server port after installation. You might need to change the ports if you did not specify an open port during installation, or if these ports are in use.
  • Transferring data between environmentsThe Data Transfer tool, available with a Product name inclusions library installation is a set of multiple scripts that work in conjunction to export and import Product name inclusions library data between different Product name inclusions library environments.

Stage 4: Deploy  BMC Digital Workplace clients to users

Deploy clients
IT users access BMC Digital Workplace through Apple iOS and Google Android mobile clients, as well as through the Universal Client (desktop web browser).

You can use one of the following methods to deploy the BMC Digital Workplace client applications to your users:

  • Make the mobile BMC Digital Workplace applications available through a URL.
  • Place the applications in your enterprise App Store.
  • Push the applications through your mobile device management platform, using either BMC Mobile Device Management or your preferred tool.
  • Announce the URL to the universal client.
