Promotional banners

Create promotional banners that a MyIT administrator can display in the MyIT Catalog. You can upload banner images of various sizes to display on different devices. Through the intuitive banner configuration page you can define when to show or hide banners based on device operating system, configure banners to display based on a date-time schedule, and specify the action to follow when the user clicks a banner image.

As a catalog administrator, you create and configure banners on the Banner Management page.

Planning the banner purpose and target devices

Before you begin, plan ahead so that you create only the banner images that you need. What is the purpose for the banner? On which devices does this purpose apply?

Some common purposes where you could use banners include, but are not limited to:

  • Advertising a new or updated service offering in your catalog.
  • Directing users to an event registration website.
  • Reminding users to adjust their clocks over the weekend to account for Daylight Savings Time.
  • Notifying all iPhone users that a security update is available.

When you have identified the devices which shall display your banners, you can then create the required banner images.

Tip

For assistance creating banner images that measure the exact dimensions of the designated sizes, see Creating banner images using a template.

How banners are displayed in MyIT

Banners can be configured in three different sizes.

When only one image is provided by the MyIT Service Broker administrator, MyIT scales the available images to match the required sizes of the banner sections established by the MyIT administrator.

Large (Hero) banner viewed on desktop devices

Large (Hero) banners are displayed one at a time and cover the width of the screen. When a banner section contains more than one image, the MyIT user can scroll banners horizontally as a wraparound carousel.

If a large (hero) banner section is the topmost section of the MyIT Catalog, the banner images advance to the next image automatically, pausing approximately six seconds between images.

Mobile (Hero) banner viewed in native mobile applications

Mobile (Hero) banners are displayed one at a time and cover the width of the mobile device. When a banner section contains more than one image, the MyIT user can scroll banners horizontally as a wraparound carousel.

If a mobile (hero) banner section is the topmost section of the MyIT Catalog, the banner images advance to the next image automatically, pausing approximately six seconds between images.

In the following example, the MyIT Service Broker administrator provided a specific version to appear on mobile devices.

Small (Feature) banner viewed both on desktop devices and in mobile applications

Feature banners are smaller images that appear in a series that the user can scroll horizontally back and forth between the first image and the last. The banners appear as approximately the same size on desktop and mobile devices, so fewer banners appear in a mobile application than on a desktop.

In the following example, the MyIT Service Broker administrator provided specific small (feature) size banners for the promoted items.

Creating banner items in MyIT Service Broker

An individual banner item contains all the image files and display settings for a single promotion. After you have created the banner images, and determined where and how the banners will be displayed, you can create a banner item in less than five minutes using the following process.

Tip

For assistance creating banner images that measure the exact dimensions of the designated sizes, see Creating banner images using a template.

To upload banner images

Create only the banner images you need. For instance, if you do not plan to display large hero images for a promotion, then you should create only the small feature size banner image.

  1. Go to Services > Banners to open the Banner Management page.
  2. Click New Banner.
  3. Enter a unique name and click Create Banner.
The name will not be visible in the MyIT catalog. You will use it only to identify the banner item in MyIT.
  4. Follow the on-screen guide to add your images into the designated banner containers.
Pay special attention to the artwork safe zones. When multiple banners are displayed, the controls to scroll banners left and right cover these areas of the image.

  5. Continue with the next steps to configure the Default Banner Settings.

To configure the default banner settings

The default banner settings shall be used for all selected device operating systems:

  1. Under Default Banner Settings, select one or more Targeted OS options to specify all the operating systems where this banner should be visible.
  2. Assign the Click Action from the following options.

    OptionPurpose
External URLSpecify a website address including the full http/https context.
Link to serviceChoose a service item in Published status from your catalog.
No actionDefine this banner as an information-only announcement.
  3. If users of certain devices require click actions that are different from the default, follow the next section.
    Otherwise, click Save.

To define alternate click actions

To assign different targets to individual Targeted OS devices that you selected in the previous section:

  1. Beside Exceptions, click Add Exception.

  2. Select one of the Targeted OS options from the selected items.

  3. Assign a Click Action to use for this exception.

  4. After you have configured all exceptions, click Save.

To release the banner item for use in MyIT

To prepare the banner item so that it can be visible to MyIT users:

  1. On the Banner Management page, locate the banner item to publish.
  2. Click  > Publish.
  3. Go to Entitlements. You must assign this banner to a virtual marketplace entitlement group.

    Note

You must entitle users to view banners. The full catalog view setting in Entitlements does not apply to banners.

  4. Open or create a virtual marketplace with the designated users to entitle.
For instructions on entitling users, see Administrative entitlement functions.
  5. Under Banners, click Banner Catalog to open the list of published banners.
  6. Select one or more banners and then click Add to include these banners in the virtual marketplace.
  7. (Optional) to remove banners from a virtual marketplace, on the Edit Virtual Markeplace panel, click Manage.
  8. Click Close.
Once the banner item is published, a MyIT administrator can add the banner item to a banner section. The banner shall appear only to the users who have been entitled to the banner item, and on the devices assigned under Targeted OS.
For instructions on configuring banners in MyIT, see Setting up sections in the Catalog in the MyIT 3.3 online documentation.

Optional tasks

The following tasks make the banner management system more flexible for a variety of use cases. However, they are not required to enable banners to be displayed.

To schedule the timing of banner display

You can set a date and time range where this banner should be visible. For the schedule to take effect, the banner item must be in Published status, not Draft or Archived.

  1. On the Banner Management page, locate the banner item to schedule.
  2. Click  > Schedule.
  3. Select the Activation date and time for when the banner should be visible.
  4. (Optional) Set a Deactivation date and time for when the banner should not be visible.
  5. (Optional) Select whether this banner should be moved to archived status upon deactivation.
  6. Click Save Schedule.

To archive banners

You can archive a banner item Draft or Published status. When you archive a banner, the banner item retains all of its settings, but is no longer available to MyIT. The banner is hidden from any banner sections in the MyIT catalog.

  1. On the Banner Management page, locate the banner item to archive.
  2. Click  > Archive.

To remove banner items from the archive

You can unarchive a banner from the Archive list. When you unarchive a banner, the banner item returns to Draft status with all of its original settings, such as visibility schedule. If the banner was assigned to a section in the MyIT catalog, the banner returns to the same section once the banner is published.

  1. On the Banner Management page, locate the banner item in the Archive list.
  2. Click  > Unarchive.

To delete banners

When banner items no longer have any use, you can delete them.

  1. On the Banner Management page, locate the banner item.
  2. Click  > Delete.
