To recover the administrative password

Contact BMC Support for more information. BMC Defender employs secure passwords that cannot be detected by the administrator. To recover and administrator password, the administrator must have a native login to the Windows server that executes BMC Defender.

If the only administrative password for the system has been lost or forgotten, the administrator must reinitialize the entire BMC Defender password database by manually reinstalling specific files as described in the following steps:

  1. On the computer with the BMC Defender Server, back up the password.dat file, located in the installationDirectory\apache directory.
Replace installationDirectory with the directory in which you installed the product. The default directory is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\BMC Defender.
  2. Copy the password.dat file from the installationDirectory\apache\install directory to the installationDirectory\apache directory, overwriting the existing password.dat file.
  3. Back up the pass.cnf file. located in the installationDirectory\config directory.
  4. Copy the pass.cnf file from the installationDirectory\apache\install directory to the installationDirectory\config directory, overwriting the existing pass.cnf file.
  5. Log on to the system with the user name admin and password admin.
The administrator can now recreate the password database.

Notes

  • The procedure replaces the password database only. All other configuration data and message data is retained without modification.
  • In some situations, BMC Support can recover the backup copies of password.dat and pass.cnf .
