BMC Defender HTTP Data Sync adapter

This topic provides the procedure to update and maintain the backup configuration of a backup server by periodically pulling data from a master server. You want to ensure that the configuration of a backup and failover server is synchronized with the configuration of a master BMC Defender Server site.

Note

After installing the BMC Defender HTTP Data Sync adapter, any changes to the backup server configuration are overwritten every hour. This software is intended to be used only for failover and redundancy. Deploy this software only at the recommendation of BMC Support.

Installation procedure

  1. Identify your master and backup BMC Defender sites.

The BMC Defender Server software must exist at both sites to complete the installation. The master site has the x-cgi\rsync.exe program installed, and the backup site has all other programs installed, including the web interface for configuring the HTTP sync config operation.

  2. Extract files from the BMC-Defender-HTTP-Data-Sync-Adapter-v.r.mm.bbbb.exe package to the backup site.

Extract the files to the BMC Defender Server directory of the backup site. You do not have to stop and restart the BMC Defender Framework service.

  3. Copy the system\rsync.exe program from the backup site to the x-cgi directory at the master site.

    Note

Add only the rsync.exe program to the x-cgi directory of the master site. No other files at the master site are required to support the HTTP Sync Config operation.

  4. After adding the x-cgi\rsync.exe program to the master BMC Defender site, log on to the backup site web interface. Navigate to the System > Tools > Auto Update > HTTP Sync Config tab, and configure the URL to that of the master site, along with other items on that page.

The URL should be the name of the master site, such as https://myserver:4331/.

  5. To test the installation, click the Download OPTION on the HTTP Sync Config page.
  6. To verify that the sync was successful, click the Process Log link and view the process log.

Security considerations

The BMC Defender HTTP Data Sync adapter provides a secure method of synchronizing configuration data. The htaccess.txt file in the x-cgi folder ensures security for HTTP authentication. On the HTTP Sync Config page of the backup site, you can configure a valid local password that can consist of any characters (from any alphabet, number, or symbol) and it can be of any length.

You can use methods other than, or in addition to, HTTP authentication. For example, you can implement specific allow-from directives to permit only the backup site from accessing the x-cgi\rsync.exe program.

Contact BMC Support to discuss security-related issues associated with this software.

Caveats and additional notes

  •  Dashboards, custom alerts, and action programs that are added at the backup server are not deleted. However, any of these files with the same name as the master server is overwritten when the HTTP sync config operation occurs.
  • The zip.exe and unzip.exe programs must reside in the system directory at both sites. These files are standard programs for BMC Defender Server systems.
  • The smtp.cnf file is excluded from the HTTP sync config operation to permit easy configuration of failover notifications.
  • Template files are not synchronized. This permits users to revert (temporarily) to configurations that might exist locally on the platform.
You can control the template files on the Correlation > Config > Templates page.
