Oracle database support

This topic lists the supported versions of Oracle database and BMC recommendations for using the Oracle database with BMC Decision Support for Server Automation.

Supported databases

The following Oracle databases are supported for use with BMC Decision Support for Server Automation:

  • Oracle database server 12Real Application Clusters (RAC), via Oracle 11g Release 2 client with the latest patches applied
  • Oracle database server 12c, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client with the latest patches applied
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 RAC, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client with the latest patches applied
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition with the partitioning option, via Oracle 10g Release 2 client
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Enterprise Edition with the partitioning option, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client
  • Oracle database server 11g Release 2 Standard Edition, via Oracle 11g Release 2 client

Notes

Cognos requires Oracle 32-bit client on both 32-bit and 64-bit computers. Installing 64-bit Oracle client and copying 32-bit libraries into the lib32 directory will not work as supported in previous releases.

If you have installed 64-bit client, an error message appears while installing BMC Decision Support for Server Automation. In that case, install the 32-bit client.

BMC recommendations

BMC recommends that you use Enterprise Edition of all Oracle databases. While the product is designed to work with the Standard Edition of these databases, the Enterprise Edition offers better performance when managing large data volumes. BMC recommendations for data warehousing also include the use of capabilities that are available in Enterprise Editions.

Oracle Client requirements

DBA privileges (sys account privileges) are required to create tablespaces and users for the reports data warehouse. Only a sys user can grant dbms_lob permission to a user and this permission is required for a reports data warehouse user.

The following table shows the supported operating system and Oracle installation combinations. This table also includes the database client software requirements for the reports server.
