Sizing for new product installations and new BMC Server Automation installations

If you are installing BMC Server Automation and BMC Decision Support for Server Automation for the first time, use the instructions in this topic to determine the size requirements for your reports data warehouse and archived data.

A sizing worksheet is available to help you calculate your sizing requirements. This sizing process requires you to manually enter the parameter values to estimate the size requirements. Use this procedure to determine the information that you need to complete the spreadsheet.

Before you begin

Download the required files, as described in Sizing tools.

To determine your reports data warehouse and archival size requirements

  1. Navigate to the directory to which you downloaded the spreadsheet files.
  2. Open the sizing spreadsheet for your database type:
    • (Oracle databases) bds_dbsizing_oracle.xls
    • (Microsoft SQL Server databases) bds_dbsizing_sqlserver.xls
  3. Follow the instructions in the Instructions tab of the worksheet to calculate the sizing requirements.
  4. After providing values in the Survey - New Customer tab, open the DB_SIZE tab.
The DB_SIZE tab provides the following sizing information:
    • Oracle:
      • Recommended initial disk space (in GB) required by each tablespace in next six months and next year
      • Recommended initial disk space (in GB) required for the archived data considering a retention period of 3 months
    • Microsoft SQL Server:
      • Recommended initial disk space (in GB) required by the data file and log file in the reports data warehouse
      • Recommended initial disk space (in GB) required for the archived data considering a retention period of 3 months

If you need to increase the database size, use the instructions provided by your database vendor.

Note

  • This sizing process calculates the size requirements based on one BMC Server Automation site. If you are using more sites, the size requirements increase proportionally.
  • Retention period indicates the period of time for which data is retained. Data that is older than the retention period is archived.
