Sizing tools

BMC provides sizing tools that you can use to determine the initial size needed for your reports data warehouse. These sizing tools also determine the size needed for the archived data.

Sizing tools for your database type help you to systematically determine the approximate size requirements for your reports data warehouse before you begin the product installation. These tools are in the form of scripts and spreadsheets and vary based on your scenario.

The sizing tools (spreadsheets and scripts) determine the database size by projecting the amount of data that you will have a specified number of days into the future. This enables you to determine your database size requirements for any required time period.

The sizing worksheets and scripts are included in the bdssa85<servicepackVersion>external-files.zip file. To download the zip file, click the BMC Decision Support - Server Automation 8.5.00 servicepackVersion External Files link on the Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) site. It is included with the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation product download files. For instructions for accessing the file and extracting its contents, see Downloading the BMC Decision Support for Server Automation external files.

Sizing scenarios

Tools are provided for the supported database types and for specific scenarios, as described in this section.

Note

Be sure to download the correct sizing tools for your database type and the current scenario.

ScenarioRequired sizing tools

Installing BMC Server Automation and BMC Decision Support for Server Automation for the first time

The sizing method provides a way to estimate size requirements based on a set of parameter values.

  • (Oracle users) bds_dbsizing_oracle.xls
  • (Microsoft SQL Server users) bds_dbsizing_sqlserver.xls

For more information about this scenario and instructions for using the worksheets, see Sizing for new product installations and new BMC Server Automation installations.

Currently using BMC Server Automation and preparing to install and use BMC Decision Support for Server Automation for the first time

The sizing method estimates the reports data warehouse sizing requirements by counting the data volume from the BMC Server Automation database.

  • (Oracle users) bds_dbsizing_for_new_bds_oracle.sql
  • (SQL Server users) bds_dbsizing_for_new_bds_sqlserver.sql
For more information about this scenario and instructions for using the sql scripts, see Sizing for new product installations and existing BMC Server Automation installations.

Currently using BMC Server Automation and BMC Decision Support for Server Automation

The sizing method estimates size requirements for the reports data warehouse and archived data by counting the data volume from the BMC Server Automation database and the reports data warehouse.

  • (Oracle users) bds_dbsizing_for_existing_bds_oracle.sql
  • (SQL Server users) bds_dbsizing_for_existing_bds_sqlserver.sql

For more information about this scenario and instructions for using the sql scripts, see Sizing for existing product installations and existing BMC Server Automation installations.
