CMF MONITOR and MainView for z/OS

MainView for z/OS is an MVS performance management product that is based on the MainView cross-system architecture and runs in the same product address space (MVS PAS) as CMF MONITOR.

The MVS PAS collects data on over 5,000 discrete elements in your system and reports on their performance through MainView for z/OS views. The views present this information in both real-time and historical time frames, which allows for on-screen analysis of current and past resource performance.

The services offered through MainView for z/OS provide you with the ability to instantly respond to any performance circumstances that your system encounters. The set of services offered includes both System Programmer Services and Exception Monitoring Services.

Just as with CMF MONITOR Online, the information that MainView for z/OS presents can be both realtime and historical, which allows for simultaneous analysis of current and past resource performance. With the MainView window interface, you can display multiple views of both products running on multiple systems, all on a single terminal screen.

MainView for z/OS and CMF MONITOR Online share the following characteristics:

  • Both products use data from the CMF MONITOR Extractor samplers and from the MVS PAS data collectors for their views.
  • Both products contain some of the same views.
  • Each product contain the SCREENS view, which has the same name and contains the same information in both.

  • Both products contain some additional views that have the same names but contain different information. These views are as follows:

    • ADMIN
    • MAIN
    • UTILITY
    • VIEWS

    MainView for z/OS has views that CMF MONITOR Online does not contain. (See the MainView Infrastructure documentationfor more information.)

    Views that are specific to CMF MONITOR Online and that do not appear in MainView for z/OS are presented in Disabling-CMF-MONITOR-data-collectors.

MainView for z/OS uses CMF MONITOR Extractor to collect some of the data for its online views. To collect the correct data, CMF MONITOR Extractor control statements that execute specific samplers must be included in the Extractor JCL.
