AWS instance types

BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.6.04 and later supports new instance types that are available in Amazon AWS, as listed at https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/. (The table at the bottom of this topic lists the instance types that are supported by default with BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.5 through 4.6.03.)

This topic includes the following sections:

To add a new instance family for BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to support

  1. Stop Platform Manager.

    Note

With BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.6.04 and later, you do not need to stop Platform Manager.

  2. Modify the AWSInstanceTypeMetaData.json file as shown in the following example code snippet.
Before saving the updated file, consider using a JSON validation tool to make sure that the file contains valid JSON code.
  3. Start Platform Manager.

    Note

With BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.6.04 and later, you do not need to restart Platform Manager for the changes to take effect.

If you use an incorrect format in the AWSInstanceTypeMetaData.json file,  Platform Manager logs an error message in the csm.log file. Platform Manager will continue to use last known good configuration; recent changes do not take effect until the format is corrected.

Note

If you create an Autoscale policy for AWS, make sure that subsequent instance types that are selected on each trigger are supported in the region where the provisioning took place.

For example, an administrator adds an Autoscale policy to add CPU. If the selected EC2 instance types on subsequent triggers are c3x.large, c1.xlarge, and cc1.4xlarge, the administrator must make sure that all of these instance types are available in the region.

For information about adding options for AWS instance families, see Defining-Service-Catalog-entries-for-Amazon-Web-Services.

Note

BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management uses vCPU, not ECU, for instance type selection.

Supported AWS instance types from BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.5 through 4.6.03

By default, BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.5 through 4.6.03 supports the following instance types. (As described in the procedure above, BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management 4.6.04 and later supports new instance types that are available in Amazon AWS, as listed at https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/.)
