BMC Network Automation environment sizing and scalability

The BMC Network Automation environment consists of the client, the server, and device agents. The information presented here are rough guidelines. For more accurate information, see the BMC Network Automation installation documentation. The following topics are provided in this section:

Sizing the client

The BMC Network Automation client is run on a browser. A regular desktop-class computer is sufficient.

Sizing the server

The BMC Network Automation server is sized based on the number of managed devices in the environment. Note that the server comes with an embedded database, which can consume a large amount of RAM. If you choose to use a remote database, the memory requirements of the server computer are reduced to 4 GB.

A single BMC Network Automation server can handle up to 25,000 managed devices. To scale beyond this number, you need to add another server to manage part of the network. These servers function independently, and you must configure them to work on separate realms.

Deployment size

Small

< 5,000

Medium

< 10,000

Large

< 25,000

Sizing the disk on the BMC Network Automation server

For sizing the disk, use the following guidelines:

Memory size on disk

Application

1500 MB total

General data

500 MB

Configuration data

1 GB per 1000 devices

Images

2 GB per 1000 devices

For example, for a system with 10,000 managed network devices, the disk size required is:

1500 MB + 500 MB + (1GB + 2 GB) * 10,000/1000 = 32 GB

Sizing the device agents

The number of device agents required depends on the number of data centers that are supported through the WAN, a firewall, or both. Each of these data centers needs a device agent to reduce the traffic over the WAN, and to reduce the number of ports that to be opened on the firewall.

Note

Although the BMC Network Automation server can use encryption for transferring information over the network, there is no appreciable change in performance or system capacity caused by encryption. There is no need to factor it into the sizing effort.

Each device agent is sized based on the number of devices that it manages. Up to 5000 devices can be supported by a device agent with a single CPU.
