Service Designer workspace overview
The Service Designer workspace enables you to create and edit service blueprints by adding blueprint objects (such as servers and applications) to a service blueprint definition. You can switch between definitions easily to specify how a service blueprint should be defined for different deployment scenarios. Select Workspaces > Service Designer to open the Service Designer.
View mode
When you first open the Service Designer, it is in view mode. If you click a blueprint in the the Blueprint Library an image of that blueprint opens in the main work area in read-only mode. If the blueprint includes another blueprint, the included blueprint is surrounded by a dashed border.
- The My Checked Out Blueprints list shows all blueprints you have currently checked out. Blueprints checked out by other users do not appear in your list.
- The buttons at the top of the work area allow you to zoom in and otherwise adjust how the blueprint is sized in the work area.
- To the right of the work area, the detail pane shows a silhouette of the blueprint, which you can move to display different parts of the blueprint in the work area. This is especially useful for large blueprints that might not be readable if scaled to fit entirely in the work area. When you click an object in the work area, the detail pane shows details for that object.
Edit mode
When you have a service blueprint opened for editing, the Service Designer changes slightly to provide the functionality you need when defining a service blueprint.
- The My Checked Out Blueprints list is replaced with the Blueprint Editor, which provides a menu of component types you can add to your blueprint.
- Two new buttons appear at the top of the work area that allow you to switch between two modes: Select/Move and Connect. Select/Move mode allows you to click components and move them in the work area, and click items in the Blueprint Editor to add new components to your blueprint. The Connect mode allows you to draw connections between components.
- The detail still shows a silhouette of the blueprint. When you select an object in the work area, the details for that object in the detail pane can now be edited.
- If your blueprint has any design issues, a clickable message appears above the detail pane.
Blueprint Library
The Blueprint Library lists existing service blueprints. A lock on a blueprint icon indicates that blueprint is currently checked out by another user. You can click a locked blueprint to view it, but you cannot edit it until it has been checked in. A green star on a blueprint icon indicates that blueprint is new, and has not yet been checked in. When you open a service blueprint for editing, new blueprints are removed from the list.
The Blueprint Library includes the following categories for organizing blueprints:
- Application Blueprints, which include only an application object
- Server/PaaS Blueprints, which include only a server or PaaS resource object.
- Service Blueprints, which can include multiple object types, connections between those objects, and even other service blueprints.
Click the refresh icon in the Blueprint Library title bar to refresh the list with the latest changes made by you and other users.
Use the search fields to refine the list of blueprints based on your search criteria. You can search by blueprint names or by the tags defined in blueprint properties. For more information about tags, see Managing blueprint tags.
By default, retired blueprints are excluded from the list. If you want to see retired blueprints, select the Show Retired Blueprints check box.
