BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation sizing and scalability

This section provides deployment architecture and sizing information for BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation. The following topics are covered in this section:

Sizing factors

BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation is based on an IBM Cognos system. Therefore, the task of sizing the installation is in fact, sizing the IBM Cognos server and software. The sizing for BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation depends on the number of concurrent users and the complexity of the query.

  • For Small deployment: 10 users
  • For Medium deployment: 15 users
  • For Large deployment: 20 users

For sizing, the following assumptions are made:

  • The web tier and application server are installed on the same computer.
  • The queries are largely of intermediate and medium complexity for interactive reports.
  • The queries are largely of intermediate and extended complexity for batch reports.
  • The installations use SSL.

Estimating the number of concurrent users

Use the following guidelines for estimating the number of concurrent users:

  1. Start with the total number of Named Users. These are the users who have access to the system.
  2. Calculate the number of Active Users. These are the users who are simultaneously logged on to the system. Cognos suggests estimating this as 10 percent of the total number of Named Users.
  3. Calculate the number of Concurrent Users. Cognos suggests estimating this as 10 percent of the number of Active Users.

For example, if the number of Named Users is 1000, the number of Active Users can be estimated as 100, and the number of Concurrent Users can be estimated as 10.

Scalability information

The BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation system consists of the web server and the application servers. The web tier is unaffected by report complexity, so it's safe to assume 50 concurrent users per CPU core. Alternatively, the application server is highly dependent on the complexity of the reports being run, and can limit the system to approximately 10 concurrent users per CPU core.

Hardware requirements

The following table shows the hardware requirements for the BMC BladeLogic Decision Support for Server Automation server. The sizing is based on a redundant system with two servers, each including the web server and the application server.
