Managing the OpenStack Logical Data Centers

A Logical Data Center is a logical construct that can be any external data center entity. For example, in the context of an OpenStack Provider, a Logical Data Center is a Project. A Logical Data Center is similar to, and at the same hierarchical level as, a network container. Both a Logical Data Center and a network container belong to a logical hosting environment, which acts as a separate, abstract entity that contains the data for the Logical Data Center or network container.

This topic describes how to customize BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management to manage the OpenStack Logical Data Center. To understand how BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management objects correspond to the OpenStack constructs, see the Overview of the OpenStack Provider.

You can onboard, offboard, edit, and map a tenant to the Logical Data Centers in the Network Container tab (part of the logical hosting environment) of the Resource Management workspace.

Before you begin

To onboard a Logical Data Center

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration Console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
  2. On the Resource Management page, click Network Containers.
  3. Click Onboard Logical Data Center  .
  4. In the Onboard Logical Data Centers dialog box, select <OpenStack Provider Name> as the provider.
    For example: openstack

  5. Select a Logical Data Center entry from the Available Logical Data Centers list, and click Add.

  6. Click Onboard.
The Logical Data Center is added to the Network Containers workspace.

    Note

When you onboard a Logical Data Center (Project) in BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management for the OpenStack Provider, the OpenStack network and its subnets details as defined in OpenStack (click to see example) are displayed in the Summary > Networks pane of the onboarded Logical Data Center.

The network name in BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management is displayed as <Network Name in OpenStack>:<Subnet Name in OpenStack>.

To edit a Logical Data Center

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration Console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
  2. On the Resource Management page, click Network Containers.
  3. Select the Logical Data Center that you want to edit.
  4. Click Edit .

  5. In the Edit Logical Data Centers window, define or edit the tag values of the Networks or subnets associated with the Logical Data Centers (project) and click Save.

For more information, see Creating tag groups and tags.

    Recommendation

To enable VM placement in specific subnets of an OpenStack Virtual Network, you must tag the subnet individually (as shown in the figure below) and also define the same Network Type tags in the OpenStack service blueprint. For a suggested tagging strategy, see Tagging recommendations and examples. To create or manage tag groups and tags from the Service Designer workspace, see Managing blueprint tags.

The tag details of networks or subnets are added, as shown in the following figure:

To offboard a Logical Data Center

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration Console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window, and select Resources.
  2. On the Resource Management page, click Network Containers.
  3. Select the Logical Data Center that you want to offboard, and click Offboard Logical Data Center.
  4. When the confirmation dialog box is displayed, click OK.

To map a tenant with a Logical Data Center

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration Console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
