BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host installation

This overview presents the following topics:

BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host architecture

BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host is a dedicated computer that collects metric data from devices (including virtual machine monitors, clusters, and host servers), and sends the data to BMC ProactiveNet Server for analysis. Collected data includes CPU usage, memory usage, and data that is specific to the host operating system.

The data collection host is composed of the following components:

Implementation of the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host uses the following arrangement of components:

  • Each BMC ProactiveNet Server in the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management environment requires one BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host.
  • The data collection host comprises one remote BMC ProactiveNet Agent (with the BMC ProactiveNet Integration Service) and up to three BMC PATROL Agents.
  • Each BMC PATROL Agent uses BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Knowledge Module to collect data from devices.

Each BMC ProactiveNet Server can monitor up to 10,000 devices.

BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host installation scenarios

You can install the BMC ProactiveNet and BMC PATROL software components for a data collection host through one of the following installation programs:

BMC ProactiveNet installation through the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer

Unknown macro: {multi-excerpt}

Through the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer, you provide connection details to BMC ProactiveNet Server hosts and to BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Hosts. Through the installer, you can implement the following processes:

  • Load the BMC ProactiveNet monitoring infrastructure packages on the BMC BladeLogic Application Server.
  • Install a remote BMC ProactiveNet Agent and BMC ProactiveNet Integration Service on each data collection host.
  • Install and configure BMC PATROL Agents and BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Knowledge Modules on the data collection host.
  • Modify an existing BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management environment, including adding a new a data collection host.

BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host standalone installation

Unknown macro: {multi-excerpt}

Run the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host standalone installation for one or more of the following reasons:

  • You do not have connection information for virtual machine monitors during the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer process.
  • You want to monitor additional virtual machine monitors using an existing data collection host.

The BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host standalone installation presents the following options:

  • Load the BMC ProactiveNet monitoring infrastructure packages on the BMC BladeLogic Application Server if the server does not yet have the packages.
  • Install a remote BMC ProactiveNet Agent with BMC ProactiveNet Integration Service on the data collection hosts.
  • Install and configure a BMC PATROL Agent with BMC Performance Manager for Virtual Servers Knowledge Module for each VMM that you want to monitor.
