Working with system templates

This topic describes how to create a system template that reflects the typical resource profile of an existing system, and how to assign a benchmark to it.

You can use system templates to simulate new virtual machines when you model server consolidation scenarios, or to simulate the commissioning or decommissioning of hosts and virtual machines when you model time forecasting scenarios. System templates enable you to plan the addition of new workloads to a virtual infrastructure, and also to plan basic cloud flexing operations.

You can also create a system template from a derived system, such as the calculated average for virtual machines in a cluster.

To create a system template

  1. From the Workspace > All Domains section, locating the appropriate domain, and expand it to access a system.
  2. Click Save as template.
  3. Analysis time range: Select or define the time period for the system data on which the template is based. For example, you can select The last 24 hours, or you can define The last 3 months, including current.
  4. Template name: Use the default template name, or define one.
  5. Save in: Use the default domain to save the template in the same domain of the system on which the template is based, or click , and then select a domain.
  6. Click Save.

To assign a benchmark to a system template

  1. Navigate to Workspace > All Domains > domainName > Systems > systemTemplateName. From the system template detail page, under BENCHMARK, click Edit .
  2. Using benchmark: Select a benchmark.
  3. Vendor: Select a vendor.
  4. System: Select a hardware model.
  5. Click Save.

Where to go from here

After you have created a system template, you can use it for working with time forecasting models for simulating the commissioning or decommissioning of hosts and virtual machines when you model time forecasting scenarios.
