vSphere views

vSphere views enable you to view and manage the capacity of a virtualized infrastructure running vSphere-based virtualization systems. These views present key capacity metrics and charts for vSphere clusters, hosts, datastores, and VMs.

You can use these views to see the total capacity, used capacity, remaining capacity, growth trend for CPU and memory subsystems. vSphere views also provide a set of recommended actions to help you resolve issues that are highlighted and identified by the Optimizer rules for your virtualized infrastructure.  These views are available in the TrueSight console. 


vSphere views help you to answer critical questions related to your vSphere virtualization environment, such as:

  • How many more VMs can be added to the existing clusters and datastores?
  • How much memory is over-committed at the host and cluster level?
  • Which VMs have exceeded their threshold values and are in need of additional resources?
  • Which VMs are over-allocated and which VMs are idle?
  • Are the datastores in the virtual center over-provisioned?
  • How much storage has been used by snapshots?

The vSphere Virtual Machines view, for instance, contains subviews that present a range of information including Overallocated VMs, Idle VMs, snapshot information and the resource allocation and usage of VMs in the virtualization view. Detailed views enable you to see a time series chart of key metrics, and the tree map view provides a graphical representation of the vSphere capacity.

Certified data sources

The certified data sources for these views are as follows:

  • VMware - vCenter Extractor Service
  • VMware - vCenter and ESX Server History Extractor

You must configure and run one of these ETL modules to import data into the view. For more information, see VMware vCenter ETLs .


If you are importing data from an ETL module other than the certified data source, then ensure that you have all the metrics populated in the ETL module so that the view shows the data.


Certain metrics are required for these views. If the metrics are not imported into the TrueSight Capacity Optimization Data Warehouse, then corresponding columns are blank. Particularly for Data Explorer view for this platform, you must import specific metrics for some of the charts to be available.
