Deploying Gateway Server and Agent
The following tasks help you identify and plan the Gateway Server and Agent deployment infrastructure:
Deployment process overview
The following table provides an overview of the procedures and tasks involved in deploying TrueSight Capacity Optimization in your environment.
Overview of the deployment process
Perform installation on all necessary computers.
Provide necessary configurations to run the product.
– Perform daily monitoring of the product
– Generate graphs and reports
– Evaluate the infrastructure
Identifying managed computers
Gather information about all the computers that you want to manage, including:
- Computer name
- IP address
- Purpose of each computer (for example, Microsoft Exchange server or database server)
Identifying the Gateway Server architecture
For identifying the Gateway Server architecture, you need to identify which computer or set of computers are to serve as console computers. The decision to use one or multiple console computers depends on the scale of the infrastructure and the number of computers to be managed. Typically a large-scale implementation (such as more than 1,000 computers) requires multiple consoles. For a small-scale implementation, one console could be sufficient, depending on the available resources of the selected computer.
The Gateway Server computer is the computer where the Gateway Server is installed. Determine whether a UNIX console or Microsoft Windows console would be more appropriate for your organization.
For larger environments, the UNIX console is more scalable.
Defining computer domains
A domain groups a set of computers together to perform data collections and analysis. How computers are grouped together affects the resulting graphs and reports, including future performance analysis and capacity planning. For example, if you want a graph to show information about the Microsoft Exchange servers or any computer with similar activities, group these computers into one domain. Identifying domain preferences can serve as a guideline for installation and configuration.
Planning for virtualized environments
If you are planning to use TrueSight Capacity Optimization in a virtual environment, review any special installation and configuration requirements specific to your chosen virtualization platform.
For more information, see Considerations for installing in virtual environments.
Validating the deployment
Testing the deployment in your environment and verifying the deployment process can minimize the impact on your normal data center operations. It is critical to test the deployment in the environment with a trial run. Plan to verify the following results:
- Data can be collected from all computers in the domain.
- Graphs and reports are being produced.
Collecting data for a few days on a particular domain is usually sufficient to identify most deficiencies. Additional tuning might be required to address any deficiency.
