Defining and managing chargeback hierarchies and targets

In TrueSight Capacity Optimization, any entity that uses IT services and incurs IT costs, such as an internal company department or business user, or an external customer of a service provider is considered a target. You can structure targets into a chargeback hierarchy to represent either organizational or logical structures. This is similar to the domain tree displayed in the Workspace folder.

The Chargeback > Hierarchies enables you to define and view targets. These targets are organized in a hierarchical structure that reflects the structure of your organization. The targets in the chargeback hierarchy are charged back for their IT costs. Using Chargeback > Hierarchies, you can select domains and associated sub domains from the Workspace and set them as targets for accounting costs for IT services.

For more information, see:

To view chargeback hierarchies

Select Chargeback > Hierarchies. The Hierarchies page displays a list of all existing chargeback hierarchies that have been configured in TrueSight Capacity Optimization.

The Hierarchies page consists of Hierarchies table with the following columns:

Column

Description

Name

Indicates the name of the chargeback hierarchy.

Description

Displays the description of the chargeback hierarchy.

Root targetIndicates the name of the root target (first target) in the chargeback hierarchy.
Creation dateIndicates the creation date of the chargeback hierarchy.

The following figure shows the sample Hierarchies page.

To view details of a hierarchy

  1. Select Chargeback > Hierarchies.
    The Hierarchies page is displayed.
  2. Click name of the required hierarchy.
    The hierarchyName page is displayed.

    Description

    Synchronization with domain tree

Indicates the synchronization mode configured for the selected chargeback hierarchy.
    • Automatic: Indicates that the synchronization mode is set to automatic and displays the domain levels up to which automatic synchronization is configured.
    • Manual: Indicates that the synchronization mode is set to manual.
Based on domainIndicates the domain from Workspace on which the selected chargeback hierarchy is based. You can click the name of the domain to view domain details in Workspace.
IdIndicates the ID of the chargeback hierarchy.
Creation dateIndicates the creation date of the chargeback hierarchy.
Last updateIndicates the last update date of the chargeback hierarchy.
TargetsDisplays the targets of the selected chargeback hierarchy. These targets can be used for accounting IT costs.

The following figure shows the sample hierarchyName page.

Adding a new chargeback hierarchy

You can add a new chargeback hierarchy that is based on the entities for which account of IT costs is required.

Before you begin

Ensure that the required domain and associated sub domains are available in the Workspace. For more information, see Out-of-the-box ETLs and Creating a domain.

To add a new chargeback hierarchy

  1. On the Hierarchies page, click Add hierarchy.
The Add hierarchy page is displayed.
  2. Enter the following details for the chargeback hierarchy.

    FieldDescription
NameType the required name for the chargeback hierarchy.
DescriptionType the required description for the chargeback hierarchy.
Based on domainSelect the required domain from the list to set it as the root domain for the chargeback hierarchy.
    Synchronization with domain tree
    • Automatic based on all domains up to level: Select this option to automatically synchronize the chargeback hierarchy with the domain tree. Select the required level from the levels available in the list up to which you want to synchronize the chargeback hierarchy. If the domain tree contains three or more levels, by default, 3 is selected in the levels list. It is recommended to use the automatic mode to synchronize chargeback hierarchy with the domain tree.
    • Manual: Select this option to manually select the sub domains from the domain tree up to which you want to synchronize the chargeback hierarchy.

    Selected domains

    • For automatic mode, the domain and associated sub domains up to the level that is selected are displayed.
    • For manual mode, the domain and available sub domains in the selected domain are displayed. You can select the required sub domain (if not selected) for synchronizing the chargeback hierarchy. You can also clear the required sub domain to exclude it while synchronizing the chargeback hierarchy.

  3. Click Save to save the new hierarchy.

The hierarchy is saved and the hierarchyName page is displayed and the chargeback hierarchy is added in the Workspace > Administration domains >Chargeback view > Business Drivers.

To edit a chargeback hierarchy

  1. Select Chargeback > Hierarchies.
    The Hierarchies page is displayed.
  2. Click name of the required hierarchy.
    The hierarchyName page is displayed.

  3. Click Edit.
The Edit hierarchy page is displayed.
  4. Edit the following details.

    FieldDescription
NameEdit the name of the selected chargeback hierarchy.
DescriptionEdit the description of the chargeback hierarchy.
Based on domainDisplays the domain that is set as the root domain for the chargeback hierarchy.
    • Manual: Select this option to manually select the sub domains from the domain tree up to which you require to synchronize the chargeback hierarchy.

Deleting a chargeback hierarchy

You can delete a chargeback hierarchy that is not required for accounting IT costs in your organization.

Before you begin

Ensure that required chargeback hierarchy is not associated with any cost model. If it is associated with any cost model, delete or remove the cost model association before you try to delete the chargeback hierarchy. For more information, see To delete a cost model.

To delete a chargeback hierarchy

  1. Select Chargeback > Hierarchies.
    The Hierarchies page is displayed.
  2. Click name of the required hierarchy.
    The hierarchyName page is displayed.
