Setting up upgrade servers

When performing an upgrade you need the following upgrade servers

Upgrade development server

This is the first server you must set up as part of your upgrade process.

Usage

You must use the upgrade development server to reconcile your AR system customization and to create overlays.

How to set up

A development server must have the same installations as on the current production server (including patches and hotfixes) and customizations. However, you need not have the same database and number of users as on the production server. It is recommended that you use the Accelerated method (DB only upgrade) to set up the development server. However depending on your current environment you can also use the duplicated method.

Upgrade QA server

Usage
  • You must use the QA server to test the reconciled AR system customization and modify the DDM mappings.
  • You can also use the QA server to set up the reference environment. You need the reference environment for creating overlays. Reference environment must have the same installations as on the current production server (including patches and hotfixes). The reference environment will have only unmodified origin objects from the BMC released software, with no customizations.
How to set up

When you set up a QA server, you must have the same installations as on the current production server. However, you need not have the same database and number of users as on the production server. It is recommended that you use the Accelerated method (DB only upgrade) to set up the development server. However depending on your current environment you can also use the duplicated method.

Staging production server

UsageThe staging server eventually becomes the production server.
How to set up

A staging server must have the same installations as on the current production server (including patches and hotfixes) and customizations. It should have the same database and number of users as on the production server. Use the Accelerated method (DB only upgrade) or Duplicated method to set up the staging server.

Note

When you create the staging server, use the same server IP address as used for the production server, to avoid integration issues when you promote the staging server to production.

Also, after you change the host name, follow the process outlined in Changing a server name when using a duplicated or migrated environment  in the BMC Remedy AR System documentation.

Upgrade reference server

If you are implementing the reference environment, you might require another server to host upgraded applications. These additional servers do not have to be production quality, but they must have compatible software and a compatible database to hold referenced copies of the BMC software and database objects. The reference server is a temporary server and is not needed after the entire upgrade process is complete.
