Preparing a Windows environment

This topic provides information about preparing a Microsoft Windows environment before installing BMC Remedy Action Request (AR) System server 9.0.

Note

To run the installer on Windows, you must have administrator access.

If you are using Terminal Services, update the Terminal Services configuration options as needed before running the suite installer; otherwise, the installer will not run. Use the Use the Group Policy Editor option to configure Terminal Services.

If you are using the data execution prevention (DEP) feature in Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 or later), Windows Server, you must configure DEP for the BMC Remedy AR System installation executable.

The following topics are provided:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. Type gpedit.msc, then click OK.
  3. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Temporary Folders.
  4. Enable the settings for Do not delete temporary folders on exit and Do not use temporary folders per session.
  5. (Optional) Restart the computer.
  6. Verify that you can run the installation successfully.

If you cannot run the installation successfully, complete the following steps:

  2. Type regedit, then click OK.
  3. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
  4. Update PerSessionTempDir to 0 and DeleteTempDirsOnExit to 0.
  5. (Optional) Restart the computer.

To configure the DEP feature

If you are using the data execution prevention (DEP) feature in Windows, configure DEP for executable programs.

  1. From the Windows Start menu, click Control Panel; then double-click System.
  2. Click the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Performance area, click Settings.
On the Data Execution Prevention tab, verify that the Turn on DEP for all essential programs and services only option is selected.
If this option is selected, no configuration is required.

  4. If the Turn on DEP for all essential programs and services only option is selected, click Add.
  5. Browse to the executable, and then click Open.
The installation program appears in the DEP program area.
  6. Click Apply; then click OK.

I believe that this would be a proper place to mention the issues of the Windows OS not being able to recognize the java path when Java has been loaded in the C or D:\Program Files\Java directory.  The install will fail with errors about 'C or D:\Program' not recognized.  This can be seen in this kbase article.
