Understanding the server name alias and host name

During the installation on Microsoft Windows or UNIX, you are asked for the BMC Remedy AR System server alias and a BMC Remedy AR System server host name or IP address for the physical computer on which the BMC Remedy AR System server will be installed. For information about server group alias name, see Server group naming Open link .

Note

When you install BMC Remedy Action Request (AR) System, the computer from which you are installing must be able to connect to ("ping") the server alias you provide. In the installer's AR System Server Name Alias field, enter the server's short name (for example, enter alpha instead of alpha.remedy.com). Additionally, ensure that you configure the primary DNS suffix. For more information, ask your system administrator.

If the server is accessible over a network, the server alias must resolve to an IP address. Consider the following points to ensure that clients can resolve the server alias:

  • BMC Remedy AR System server name alias maps to the Server-Name configuration parameter in the ar.conf (Unix) or ar.cfg (Windows) file.
In a server group, which is the default installation, Server-Name must resolve to your load balancer.
  • BMC Remedy AR System server host name or IP address maps to the Server-Connect-Name configuration parameter. For a single server environment (server group with a single server), the alias can be the same name as the host name.
On a primary server, Server-Connect-Name must be set to the name of the primary server. Similarly, for other servers, Server-Connect-Name must point to the respective server.
  • Use only alphanumeric names containing only lowercase letters a through z and numbers 0 through 9.
  • You can use hyphens (-), but the name cannot start or end with a hyphen.
  • Avoid underscores (_) and other special characters (for example, $) because these characters do not comply with DNS rules.

The AR System installer (CMDB/ITSM etc. as well) asks for the AR System Server Name Alias. Are we supposed to enter the load balancer (short) name or the host name here? I would think it is the former, but during a discussion we had with BMC support they inidcated it should be the latter.

Can anyone from BMC try to answer the question: Are we supposed to enter the load balancer (short) name or the host name here?

      Hi Joachim,

Thank you for your feedback on the documentation. We recommend you to enter the host name for the AR System Server Name Alias as indicated by BMC Support.

      Regards,

      Himanshu
