Performing the BMC Remedy Mid Tier upgrade

The installer upgrades the following components

  • BMC Remedy Mid Tier server

  • BMC Remedy Mid Tier Configuration Tool

The mid tier can be upgraded independent of other platform components. However, beginning with 18.05, it should be upgraded before or at the same time the AR System Server is upgraded.

Do not install any other application on the computer where you have installed the Remedy Mid Tier.

Before you begin

To upgrade BMC Remedy Mid Tier

  1. If you have not already done so, download the BMC Remedy AR System installer on a computer other than where you installed the AR System server.
  2. Unzip the appropriate installer (for example, ARSuiteKitWindows.zip or ARSuiteKitLinux.zip).
  3. Open the Disk 1 folder.
  4. Start the installer and double-click setup.exe (for Windows) or setup.bin (for UNIX or Linux).
  5. In the lower-right corner of the Welcome pane, click Next.
  6. Review the license agreement, click I agree to the terms of license agreement, and then click Next.
    1. Select Upgrade.
    2. Navigate to the directory in which you want to install BMC Remedy Mid Tier.
The default locations are C:\Program Files\BMC Software\ARSystem and /opt/bmc/ARSystem (UNIX and Linux).
    3. Select AR System mid tier and click Next.
The installer validates the system resources of your computer and displays a list of available features.
  7. Enter the correct JRE path, and then click Next.
For more information, see the installation spreadsheet.
  8. If you have upgraded Tomcat before upgrading Mid Tier, on the Tomcat Deployment Directory Information panel, provide the path to the new Tomcat directory and wait for the Tomcat Service Name to get populated automatically.

    Note

If the Tomcat Service Name is not automatically detected, ensure that the Tomcat service is created and running. Tomcat must be registered as a service for the installer to detect it.

For more information about installing the Tomcat services, see  https://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-8.5-doc/windows-service-howto.html in the Apache Tomcat documentation.

  9. Enter the values from the planning spreadsheet for BMC Remedy Mid Tier.
After you have entered the required information, the installer validates your input, and then the Installation preview pane appears, listing the product and product features that will be upgraded.
  10. Click Next to start the upgrade.
After the post-installation cleanup, a summary of the installation appears.
  11. Click View Log to review the installer log for any errors or warnings. The install logs are available at the following location:
    • (WindowsC:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\arsystem_install_log.txt
    • (UNIX) /tmp/arsystem_install_log.txt
  12. To exit the AR System installer, click Done.
  13. Navigate to http://<midTierServer>:<port>/arsys/shared/config/config.jsp, and open the BMC Remedy Mid Tier Configuration Tool.
  14. Click General Settings.
  15. Select the AR System server as the authentication server, and then click Save Changes.
  16. Log out.
  17. (Optional) Restart the BMC Remedy Mid Tier web service.

After you upgrade BMC Remedy Mid Tier

After you upgrade, check whether a patch or fix has been released in Release notes and notices. When you upgrade the product, you must install the latest service pack and then apply the latest patch (if available). Patches are not full installations and must be applied over the latest full installation (main release or a service pack).

Atrium Single Sign-On is not supported in BMC Remedy AR System 9.1. If you have BMC Atrium Single Sign-On in your environment, you must install BMC Remedy Single Sign-On after upgrading BMC Remedy Mid Tier.

On the first part of this page, there are three bullet points under the "The installer upgrades the following components" heading. The third one is "Apache Tomcat JSP engine". Is that still true (that the installer will upgrade Tomcat) now that Tomcat is no longer bundled with the Mid Tier installer (per https://docs.bmc.com/docs/brid2002/restricted-statement-of-direction-compatibility-matrix-925014933.html)?

Is it correct that currency utility is a prerequisite for midtier upgrade? Shouldn’t this belong to the ARS upgrade?

Also, should currency utility be run regardles of current version that you are upgrading from - or only if you are on a version older then 9.1.04

    Regards Peter

      Hi Peter,

Thank you for your feedback on the documentation. We have moved the currency utility documentation to the ARS upgrade topic - Performing the BMC Remedy AR System upgrade.

In response to your second question, you can run the currency utility regardless of the current version. But we recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of Remedy.

      Regards,

      Himanshu
