Types of profiles

The following table describes the types of profiles that you can use.

Profile type

Description

System-default profile

This profile, which is always named SYSTEM-DEFAULT-PROFILE, is created during RMGR customization. Only one system-default profile can be stored in a repository. It contains critical default information, such as the name of a recovery utility. If you do not specify any other profile for a function, RMGR uses this profile. RMGR also uses this profile for values that are left blank in other profiles. Some fields cannot be left blank in the system-default profile because they provide necessary default values in case other profiles contain blanks.

You can update but not delete this profile. If you are creating a new repository, use member IRMREPIN or IRMMODEL in the product sample library to ensure that the system-default profile is created.

Object-assigned profile

You assign this type of profile to a particular object by using the object management panels in the ISPF interface. The following information is the only information that is valid in this type of profile:

  • DBU subsystem ID
  • Information that controls an image copy during or after recovery
  • Alternate data set, volume, and SMS information

If you assign this type of profile to an object, its fields are always used regardless of other profiles that may be specified for the function.

Elemental-group-assigned profile

You assign this type of profile to a particular elemental group by using the group management panels in the ISPF interface. RMGR uses all information in this type of profile when it is performing a function on the elemental group. RMGR may use selected fields in this type of profile when performing a function on a connecting group to which the elemental group belongs.

Connecting-group-assigned profile

You assign this type of profile to a particular connecting group by using the group management panels in the ISPF interface. RMGR uses all information in this type of profile when it is performing a function on the connecting group.

Override profile

You specify this type of profile at function initiation for use only during this execution of the function. The fields in this type of profile override corresponding fields in any connecting-group-assigned profile, in any elemental-group-assigned profile, and in the system-default profile. If the override profile contains blank field values, RMGR can use values from a connecting-group-assigned profile and (in some instances) an elemental-group-assigned profile.
