Monitoring the operating system


Objective

To set up the environment to start monitoring the Windows or Linux operating system.


User persona

The tasks in this end-to-end use case must be performed by a tenant administrator.


Operating system monitoring — At a glance


Step 1: Set up monitoring
  1. Identify the host that you want to monitor.
  2. Install a PATROL Agent with the required KM.


Step 2: Install a PATROL Agent and a KM

Deploy the predefined package for Linux or Windows.

Linux: Copy the install script for the Predefined_Package_For_Linux_x64 package.

Windows: Download and install the Predefined_Package_For_Windows_x64 package.

After the PATROL Agent and KM are installed, the out-of-the box monitoring policies start monitoring your system.

On the Administration > Repository page, do the following:

  1. Click Create Install Script from the action menu for the Predefined_Package_For_Linux_x64 entry.
  2. Log on to the Linux host that you want to monitor.
  3. Paste and run the install script that you copied.
  4. Provide the following information when prompted:
    • Root login credentials
    • PATROL default account credentials

The install script installs the PATROL Agent for Linux and the Linux KM.


On the Administration > Repository page, do the following:

  1. Click Download from the action menu for the Predefined_Package_For_Windows_x64 entry to download the package.
  2. Click Copy API Key and paste the information in a text editor.
  3. Log on to the Windows host that you want to monitor.
  4. Copy and extract the package that you downloaded earlier to a temporary location on the Windows host.
  5. Run the following command:
    RunSilentInstall.exe -apikey=<apikey> where <apikey> is the API key that you pasted in a text editor.
  6. Provide the PATROL default account credentials when prompted.

The RunSilentInstall command installs the PATROL Agent for Windows and the Windows KM.

Step 3: Ensure that policies are enabled

Ensure that the following out-of-the-box policies are enabled:

  • Predefined policy for Linux
  • Predefined policy for Windows

If they are disabled, enable them.

To enable a policy, on the Configuration > Infrastructure Policies page, click the action menu of a disabled policy and click Enable

To disable a policy, on the Configuration > Infrastructure Policies page, click the action menu of an enabled policy and click Disable.
