Licensing BMC Helix Data Manager
BMC Helix Data Manager requires a license for each machine on which the BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench or BMC Helix Data Manager Runtime are installed. Without a valid BMC Helix Data Manager license:
- The BMC Helix Data Manager Runtime service/daemon will not start
- The BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench will not allow users to log in
Important
If you have installed the latest hotfix of BMC Helix Data Manager version 21.3.05, you do not require to apply a license key. For more information, see knowledge article 000405887 .
The BMC Helix Data Manager license file is linked to the MAC address of the machine. Machines with multiple network cards can have multiple MAC addresses.
To obtain Mac address by using BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench
- Open the BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench.
- Log in with the default user name and password:
- User: hdm
- Password: DataM@nag3r
The MAC Address for licensing appears.
- Copy the MAC Address and open a case with the license team at BMC Support.
To obtain the MAC address by using command line utility
- Run the windows batch file as an administrator in the following location:
C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Helix Data Manager\Engine\bin\hdmlicense.bat - Open the licenserequest.txt file that is created in the bin directory.
The file includes the following with contents:- Current IP address: 192.168.1.101
- Current Primary MAC address (used for licensing): 00-0C-29-76-81-42
- Provide these details to BMC Support.
To apply the BMC Helix Data Manager license
- Contact BMC Support and give them the MAC address for the computer on which you are performing the installation.
They will give you two license files that relate to the machine on which you are installing the BMC Helix Data Manager runtime or Workbench. These are:- BMC Helix Data Manager.lic
- BMC Helix Data Manager.lic.sig
- Copy the files to the BMCHelixDataManagerInstallRoot\Licence directory.
By default, this path is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Helix Data Manager\Licence on Windows. - Start the BMC Helix Data Manager engine from the Windows service control panel.
- Restart the BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench service.
You must restart the Workbench after applying the license files. - Open the hdm.log file in BMCHelixDataManagerInstallRoot\Engine\log directory.
By default, this path is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Helix Data Manager\Engine\log on Windows. A successful BMC Helix Data Manager startup will write a similar output to the example below.2021-06-14 13:28:33,601 INFO [main] system.EngineLauncher - Service Requests Startup

Do we need to buy this license from BMC ? or is this offered free of cost as part of ARS platform ? can we use this for versions lesser than 20.02 where they bespoke applications built on ARS ?
