Creating a domain

By default, the Management Console contains the Grid (that is, root) domain. The Grid domain serves as a container for nodes, databases and BMC Database Automation administrator users for the domain. You can create additional domains and subdomains within the Grid domain. Creating additional domains improves organization and the enables administrators to have per-domain access and privileges.

Before you begin

Take time to consider how you want to organize your nodes and databases within the Management Console, such as the number of domains to be created and the planned content of those containers.
Remember the following when planning the organization of your nodes and databases:

  • Domains can be created within the Grid or root domain and as subdomains of existing domains.
  • Up to 4 domain levels can be created within the Grid level.
  • In a Multi-Manager configuration you add domains to the Content Manager.

To create a domain

  1. In the Context Frame, select Grid.
  2. In the Grid view, select Maintenance > Add Domain.
  3. In the Add Domain page, enter the name of the domain you want to create in the Domain Name field.
  4. Click Add Domain.
A pop-up message indicates successful domain creation, and the domain is listed in the Grid submenu of the Context Frame.

To add a subdomain

  1. In the Context Frame, navigate to and then select the domain within which you want to create a subdomain.
  2. In the Contents page, select Maintenance > Add Domain.
  3. In the Add Domain page, enter the name of the domain you want to create in the Domain Name field.
  4. Click Add Domain.
A pop-up message indicates successful domain creation and the domain is listed in the Grid submenu of the Context Frame.
