    Important

Datasets cannot be copied into themselves. To resolve this, rename the target dataset or, to move datasets to another z/OS host, choose a different target host.

  5. Do one of the following:
    • Optionally, if there are multiple hosts, from the Target host list, select the target host.
    • Optionally, click Configure to configure a host.
  6. If necessary or desired, rename the target datasets. By default, the target names are the same as the source names, however, they can be renamed by doing one of the following:
    • Select the target and click Rename. The Rename Target Dataset dialog box appears. Type a name for the target resource and click OK.
    • Click Rename All. The Rename All dialog box appears. In the Find field, type the characters to be replaced, and in the Replace with field type the replacement value. Click OK.
  7. In the Options box, select the option to be applied. Available options vary by resource type:
    • Prompt me before copying each dataset: Displays the Dataset exists dialog box before performing the copy operation for each dataset that already exists. This dialog box allows users to set options individually for each dataset. This option is not available if the Run in background check box is selected.
    • Copy the data>Sequential & VSAM (for sequential, VSAM, or IAM datasets)
      • Overwrite existing data
      • Append to existing data
    • Copy the data>PDS members
      • Replace existing like-named members
    • Copy data even when dataset attributes do not match: If certain attributes, such as record length, do not match, attempt to force the copy. In this stated case, from the Pad character list, select Null or Space as necessary to achieve a successful copy.
    • Delete and allocate target dataset before copying: First delete the target dataset and then allocate it exactly like the source dataset before copying.
      • Skip the dataset: Allows the selected resource to be skipped during processing.
      • When allocating target datasets, use the SMS parameters of the source dataset: When allocating the target, apply the same SMS Parameters as the source; otherwise, let the system decide.
      • Run in background: Runs the copy operation in the background to allow for other foreground processing. When processing is finished or canceled, a dialog box appears with a link to the Copy to Host dialog box with summary results.
  8. If File-AID is installed and the source host is at the correct PTF level, complete the Selection Criteria tab to use selection criteria. Refer to the Topaz Workbench File-AID/Eclipse User Guide for detailed information.

    Important

Datasets can only be copied when using selection criteria; they cannot be moved.

  9. Click Copy. Processing can be suspended by clicking Pause and then option settings can be changed. The Progress view shows the status if the operation is running in the background.

    • The status of each dataset copy or move appears in the Status column. Hover over the Status column to get detailed information on the status. Alternatively, click Details to open the Details dialog box, which displays a summary of the results without the need to hover.
    • When copying multiple resources and some are not successful, consider selecting the successful resources and clicking Remove to remove them from the display, then make any corrections to the remaining resources and click Restart to attempt the copy operation again. In certain circumstances, an opportunity is given to remove the successfully completed results before retrying the operation.

    Important

If a volume on the target host is required during allocation of the dataset, the Specify Volume dialog box appears. Enter the volume to be used for all VSAM files in the list and click OK to submit the copy operation. Clicking Cancel terminates the copy request and the status column shows Skipped on any remaining datasets.

    Important

If there are any differences in the format of the source and target datasets, a warning appears giving an option to proceed or cancel.

    Important

Previous executions can be opened from the Event History view. Refer to Using Event History to View Results or Rerun a Copy or Move.

Using Event History to View Results or Rerun a Copy or Move

The Event History view displays the results as do copy or move operations.

To view prior copy or move results

Open the Event History view. The following statuses may appear:

  • Success indicates that the involved resources were copied/moved without errors.
  • Skipped indicates that the copy/move was not performed due to user intervention such as canceling the copy/move.
  • Failed indicates a failure to complete any portion of the copy/move action.

Other Notes

Any copy/move actions of datasets/PDS members outside of Host Explorer are not supported. Both drag and drop actions can occur within the tree pane of Host Explorer.

Copying and Moving Files Between z/OS and Windows

Users can copy or move PDS and sequential datasets between z/OS and Windows.

Copying from Windows to z/OS

To copy a Windows file to an existing sequential dataset
1. In Host Explorer, right-click the Windows file and select Copy.

Important

UTF-8 encoding is assumed for the local files and will be translated using the host code page specified at login.

2. In Host Explorer, right-click the existing sequential dataset into which to copy the Windows file and select Paste. The Copy to Dataset dialog box appears with the source and target filenames populated.

Important

If any source file name is too long or is invalid, a message appears. Click Rename to change the file name.

3. On the Options tab, select one of the following buttons to indicate how the paste action should affect existing data:

  • Overwrite existing data
  • Append to existing data

4. Optionally, select the Copy data even when dataset attributes do not match check box to truncate the record if the Windows file is longer than the LRECL of the mainframe dataset. Additionally, from the Pad character list, select the type of character to be used for padding if the Windows file is shorter than the LRECL of the mainframe dataset.
