Space estimation formulas

The DASD MANAGER PLUS Space Estimation facility calculates data-set sizing information for DB2 table spaces, table space partitions, and indexes.

This calculation is based on information supplied by the user or by information that exists in the BMCSTATS database, the DB2 catalog, or the Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF) catalog

Note

Space estimation is not available for objects that have partial statistics.

The BMCSTATS batch utility uses the Space Estimation facility to calculate values for the REORGSPACE, REORGSPACE_KB, and REORGNLEVELS columns for table spaces or table space partitions and index spaces or index partitions.

The DASD MANAGER PLUS user interface also allows you to access the Space Estimation facility. You use the online facility like a calculator or spreadsheet, with fill-in-the-blank panels, and the panels display the resulting estimates.

The Space Estimation facility calculates DB2 object space requirements in both kilobytes and tracks. The tracks estimate depends on the device type for the DB2 object, as the number of kilobytes per track varies across device types.
