Installing languages

BMC Remedy AR System supports data input and manipulation in the following languages and character sets:

  • Western Europe: Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish (windows-1252)
  • Central Europe: Albanian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, and Slovenian (windows-1250)
  • Baltic: Estonian, Greenlandic, Lappish, Latvian, and Lithuanian (windows-1257)
  • Traditional Chinese (BIG5)
  • Simplified Chinese (GB2312)
  • Japanese (Shift-Jis and EUC)
  • Korean (EUC-KR)

You can select a single language or multiple languages when you install BMC Remedy AR System server and clients. To add languages not selected during the initial installation, run the installation for each client again. English serves as the default language on all platforms, and you cannot unselect it during installation.

The ability to load multiple languages on to a single client computer enables users to move seamlessly between languages by simply changing the preferred locale setting. It also enables multiple users to share a single computer by selecting a unique locale for each user.

Viewing system messages in the same language as the client

During installation of the BMC Remedy AR System server, the language resource file, which holds system and error messages, is stored within the BMC Remedy AR System server directory at the following default location:

C:\Program Files\BMC Software\ARSystem\


In the default server directory, each language installed has its own resource file and follows the format: arcatalog_languageCode.

The languageCode follows the three-letter ISO 639 standard. The following website has a complete listing of the ISO 639 3-letter language codes:

To enable users to view system messages in the same language as the client, select the client language during the server installation (only valid for Japanese, French, German, English, Italian, or Spanish). If the client is set to a locale that is not provided, but that is supported, you can add system messages to the AR System Message Catalog form for that locale. Otherwise, users will receive system messages in the server's locale.

When you install the BMC Remedy AR System server, user-selected translations of the system forms (such as Group and User) are installed.

Changing the default language of the AR System server

You can change the default language of the AR System Server when the regional language in the Control Panel is different from the server language specified in the Server Information form. The server language is displayed on the Configuration tab of the Server Information form. The default server language is en; UTF-8.

Perform the following steps to change the default language of BMC Remedy Action Request System server:

  1. Open arserver.conf file from the AR Installation directory.
  2. Look for the maximum jvm.option in the arserver.conf file. Add the following line to the jvm.option.

    # JVM options (number indicates option order)

    The code example below shows how to change to the Greek language. 

    Do not introduce any spaces before and after the jvm.option.

  3. Save the changes and restart the BMC Remedy AR System server.
