Changing a server name when using a duplicated or migrated environment

This section describes the configuration procedures required to change the server name of a BMC Remedy Action Request System (BMC Remedy AR System) server. The steps involve updating one or more of the following items:

  • (Windows only) Registry information using regedit
  • Configuration files using a text editor
  • Form data using a BMC Remedy AR System client, such as a browser

Server-Name is the alias name by which an AR System server recognizes itself. You might need to change a Server-Name alias because:

Use caseDescription
Use case 1You are setting up a staging server (as part of the upgrade process) by installing all of the products first and then restoring the database from the production server. The database might contain references to the production server, which might not be applicable to the staging environment. In this case, you need to change only the form data.
Use case 2You are setting up a staging server (as part of the upgrade process) by restoring the database first and then installing the new BMC Remedy AR System environment (this is called an accelerated installation). In this case, you need to change only the form data.
Use case 3The Server name is changing due to a policy or host name change. In this case, you must change the Registry (on Windows), the configuration files, and the form data.
Use case 4You are moving the server into a server group and using a new Server-Name alias. In this case, you must change the Registry (on Windows), the configuration files, and the form data.

Note

The steps describe both Microsoft Windows and UNIX environments. In some cases (such as working with the Registry), the steps apply only to Windows.

The following section provides information about procedures you need to perform to change the sever name of BMC Remedy Action Request components and applications.

The following table lists steps for renaming BMC Remedy AR system sever if you are setting up a staging server by installing all the products first and then restoring the database from the production server.

Using the Developper Studio you also need to change the WSDL URLs of the Web Services.

Perhaps if you can counter verify this with this post I tried to keep up to date as and when i find issues:

      Hi,

      Also missing:

Knowledge Management LOB fields with the Midtier reference/URL

      e.g.

Form: RKM:ProblemSolutionTemplate (and other RKM:*Template forms)

      Field: RKMTEMPLATEPROBLEM

Exporting them as arx, string replace and import. OR SQL Replace() command. I used SQL for speed.

        Hi Danny,

I have verified this with the SME. Starting from 8.1 SP1, for the RTF data stored with the URL, the URL automatically corrects the Server-Name.

        Thanks,

        Poonam

Are there any steps to be done in a Hub and Spoke environment when renaming servers?

We tried to Deregister a spoke and it wouldn't work in the copied environment.

        Hi Scott,

Because you have commented on 8.1 topic, we are assuming that you are using AR System 8.1 Server and midtier. If you are using AR System 9.x Server and midtier, you can leverage the server rename utility instead of making manual changes. For more information, see Renaming the AR System server
        (https://docs.bmc.com/docs/display/public/ars91/Renaming+the+AR+System+server)

If you are using AR System 8.1 Server and midtier, perform the following tasks:

        • Update the server name in AR System Key Store and AR System Server to Key Map forms

There are two forms used for Hub and Spoke functionality AR System Key Store and AR System Server to Key Map. These forms contain the server names which you must update as per the renamed server name.

        • Add the new server name in midtier configuration once you rename the server.
