Installing a server group

This topic describes the installation flow that you use to install a server group for BMC Remedy Action Request (AR) System, BMC Atrium Core, and other BMC products.

  • Before beginning your installation, review the Planning and Planning a server group installation topics.
  • If you are performing a new installation, make sure that the server is clean. A clean system has not had any BMC Remedy software previously installed on it. If BMC Remedy software was installed on one or more of your servers, BMC recommends that you re-image the system back to a state with no BMC Remedy products installed.
  • If you are not using a load balancer for your server group, ensure that your network is configured to resolve the server name. For information about load balancers and BMC Remedy AR System, see Configuring a hardware load balancer with BMC Remedy AR System.

Preparing to install your server group

Review the BMC Remedy AR System and BMC Atrium compatibility matrix for the latest, most complete information about platforms currently supported by BMC Remedy and BMC Atrium products.
Note: To access this information, you must log on with your BMC support ID and password.

Review the requirements for your computer platform:
a. Review the the hardware requirements for the computers in your server group.
b. Review the software requirements for the computers in your server group.
c. Review the 32-bit and 64-bit requirements for the computers in your server group.
d. Review the additional Atrium Core requirements.

Prepare your databases before you start the server group installation.
Tip: Identify the database that the server group will share, as well as the database logon information and database settings. All your AR System servers will connect to this database. You need this information before you install the first AR System server.

Obtain licenses for BMC AR System server and other BMC products.

Complete the MS Excel planning spreadsheet.

Download the installation files.

Prepare your environment and prepare your components and applications.

Server group installation flow

Install the first AR System server.
This step includes:

  • Installing the BMC Remedy Mid Tier on a separate computer. You use the mid tier to configure the AR System server.
  • Activating licenses on the server
  • Installing additional BMC Remedy products (for example, BMC Atrium Core or BMC Remedy IT Service Management)

Configure the first server to be a server group member.

Test and confirm that the first server is working properly.

Install the next server in the server group.
Ensure that you select the server group installation options.

  • Specify the same database name, database logon information, and database settings as for the first server.
  • Select the Server Group option instead of Overwrite or Upgrade. Selecting the Server Group option during installation preserves all existing data, forms, and workflow in the database. It does not configure the servers as members of a server group. It merely indicates to the installer that the server shares the database with an existing BMC Remedy AR System server, with or without server group membership.

Configure the next server for the server group.

Test and confirm that the current server is working properly.
Note: Repeat steps 11, 12, and 13 for each subsequent server in the group.
