Changing a server name when using a duplicated or migrated environment

We recommend using the Renaming-the-AR-System-server utility to change the server name of BMC Remedy AR System server.

This section describes the configuration procedures required to change the server name of a BMC Remedy Action Request System (BMC Remedy AR System) server when you upgrade from versions earlier than 9.0.

The steps involve updating one or more of the following items:

  • (Windows only) Registry information using regedit
  • Configuration files using a text editor
  • Form data using a BMC Remedy AR System client, such as a browser

Server-Name is the alias name by which an AR System server recognizes itself. You might need to change a Server-Name alias because:

The steps describe both Microsoft Windows and UNIX environments. In some cases (such as working with the Registry), the steps apply only to Windows.

The following section provides information about procedures you need to perform to change the server name of BMC Remedy Action Request components and applications. 

Use case 1

The following information lists steps for renaming BMC Remedy AR System server if you are setting up a staging server by installing all the products first and then restoring the database from the production server.

BMC Remedy AR System

Begin by updating key BMC Remedy AR System forms to ensure the staging server reflects the correct server name and preferences.

  1. Update the AR System Server Group Operation Ranking form.
    You must delete records from the servgrp_board table where the serverName column does not match the servers in the new server group.

  2. You must delete records from the ft_pending and ft_schedule tables that do not match the servers in the new server group.

  3. You must delete records from the AR System Monitor form that do not match the servers in the new server group.

BMC Remedy Email Engine

Update the email configuration to align with the new server identity for proper mail routing.

BMC Remedy Web Services registry

Ensure all web service integrations point to the correct server by updating the registry entries.
Update all server name occurrences of each record in the AR System Web Services Registry form.

Help file paths

Modify help file paths to reflect the new server name, ensuring users access the correct documentation.

BMC Atrium Core

Reconfigure Atrium Integrator components to recognize and operate with the new server name.

  1. Atrium Impact Simulator

    1. Update the charAISCellHost and iAISCellPort fields in the AIS:GlobalPreferences form.

BMC Remedy IT Service Management

Update ITSM-related forms to maintain accurate server references across asset and compliance modules.

  1. Update the Server field the AST:ARServerConnection form.

  2. Update the URL field in the SYS:Attachments form.
    (If the out-of-box data for survey is modified by replacing the <arserver> or <midtierserver> placeholders with the host names, only then change these values to the correct server host name.)

Adjust Service Request Management configurations to ensure service requests are routed through the correct server.

Update Service Level Management preferences to reflect the new Mid Tier and server settings.

Use case 2

The following information lists steps for renaming BMC Remedy AR System server if you are setting up a staging server by restoring the database first and then installing the new BMC Remedy AR System environment.

After you restore the database, clean up the Server Group tables by removing any records with old server names. Perform the following steps:

  1. Select serverName from the servgrp_board table.
  2. Select serverName from the servgrp_config table.
  3. Select serverName from the servgrp_resources table.
  4. Restart AR System Services. 

BMC Remedy AR System

Update BMC Remedy AR System forms and tables to reflect the new server name and remove legacy entries.

  1. Update the Server Login List field in the AR System User Preference form.
  2. Update the Server field in the Report form.
    1. Update the AR System Server Group Operation Ranking form.
    2. Replace all old server names with the new server names.
    3. If the old environment had more servers than the new environment, remove any records that are left with the original server names.
  3. You must delete records from the ft_pending and ft_schedule tables that do not match the servers in the new server group.

BMC Remedy Email Engine

Reconfigure the email engine settings to ensure proper communication with the new server.

BMC Remedy Web Services registry

Update all web service registry entries to point to the new server name for seamless integration.

Help file paths

Ensure help documentation paths are updated to reflect the new server environment.

Reconfigure Atrium Integrator and related components to align with the new server setup.

  1. Update the ARServerName field in the BMC.CORE.CONFIG:BMC_FederatedDataInterface form.

AR System Monitor

Clean up monitoring data by removing entries associated with the old server name.

  1. Delete records with the incorrect Host Name in the AR System Monitor form.

Use case 3

The following information lists steps for renaming BMC Remedy AR System server if the server name has changed due to a policy or host name change.

BMC Remedy AR System

Update BMC Remedy AR System configuration files, registry entries, and forms to reflect the new server name.

  1. Update the -x <newServerName> string in the armonitor.cfg file.
  2. Update the server_name field in the pluginsvr_config.xml file.
  3. Update the Windows Registry.
  4. Update the UNIX environments.
  5. Update the Server field in the AR System Searches Preference form.
  6. Update the Server Login List field in the AR System User Preference form.
  7. Update the Server field in the Report form.
  8. Update the AR System Server Group Operation Ranking form.
    You must delete records from the servgrp_board table where the serverName column does not match the servers in the new server group.
  9. You must delete records from the ft_pending and ft_schedule tables that do not match the servers in the new server group.

BMC Remedy Mid Tier

Use the Mid Tier Configuration Tool to update server settings and clean up outdated files.

  1. Clean up files in BMC Remedy Mid Tier.

BMC Remedy Email Engine

Update the email engine configuration files and forms to reflect the new server name.

  1. Update the Email Server Name/IP field in the AR System Email Mailbox Configuration form.
